Wife lost job, life on verge of falling apart again

Date: April 24th, 2018 12:57 PM Author: Cerebral Site My wife just called me in hysterics because she just lost her contract tele-medicine job. She still has two months to go on her contract and her boss offered her a job at the same $175 an hour rate she has now for an 8-5 telemedicine job with a one hour break. The difference is her current job has tons of free time and she usually only saw patients 2-4 hours day and had almost all afternoon off most days. Her new job she would actually have to work the whole time (albeit at home). She finds this unacceptable and is demanding that I find a new job and that we relocate somewhere in the next couple months before our lease ends. I just took a new job and I work in an industry with relatively few big players - me quitting now would be burning a bridge and trying to find a new job could be tough.
I told her to calm down and to just take the job she was offered temporarily until she finds something else. We could sign a lease as planned and then break the lease once we decide where we want to live and I get a job. Trying to jam through a cross-country move that requires us both to find new jobs, childcare, and a place to live in 8 weeks is stupid. Plus we haven't decided where we want to live long term and could be repeating the mistake that led us to California in the first place. She told me that I may need to stay here and she was going to move with my daughter until I find a job because she didn’t want to live in an apartment/townhouse where we could pay a break fee. She feels her job is too unstable and that doing telemedicine would be too isolating because our daughter will be in daycare instead of with a nanny and she will be home alone.
LMAO at my life. Why does shit like this keep happening to me? This is not flame. Taking advice and questions.

instead of fighting her, or giving her ultimatums, why not approach it differently - tell her you agree with her in principle (trying to get out of so cal eventually) and that you support her wanting to be a good mom and spend time with the kid, but that her rushed approach will hurt you and the baby in the long run. emphasize the points you agree on, make sure you listen to her so that you can intelligently and calmly address her fears, and help her see your point of view.
tell her you guys are a team, and it's you two against the world, not against each other. sappy and cheesy, but women respond to this much better than ultimatums, ime.
also, she is freaking out because she feels out of control. make her feel like you're in control, and she doesn't have to worry about it. |
