When he ran the downsides of trade had not become apparent yet so it seems a bit unfair to blame him for that. He always had an impressive and detailed grasp of the issues, he had real plans. Hillary never seemed to believe in anything but HER turn. The contrast between them is enormous when you really think about it, he must have been so frustrated by her sassy gay millenial staff.

in retrospect this is true. The shock caused by China joining the WTO was huge, and hurt the working and middle class here in America. Opening up trade hadn't had a similar effect before, even with relatively developed countries (to China.) I think it's fair to say it was a mistake, but not that he intentionally allowed economic harm.

It hurt the working class, and the middle class too, but it is not right to say that everyone thought that was going to happen at the time. Some people said that, but most economists disagreed and opening up trade had never produced such horrific effects in the past. Criticizing someone for a mistake is fair, but I've always found this way of thinking a bit conspiratorial.

The evidence doesn't really support the claim that nafta had a huge negative impact on US workers. Obviously there was some of that, but in general Americans benefited across classes. The shock caused by opening trade with China is another story, the evidence that it caused huge dislocation and social problems is pretty clear and there was a landmark paper about it a few years ago. Probably because China has a reasonable average IQ, which means that it stable and effective unskilled labor relative to others. That might not be what made it different, but it's my guess.

I'm not talking about the politics, I'm am talking about the substance and what experts actually believed. Most people are stupid, and while I care deeply about my fellow Americans that does not mean they actually know what the best policies are.

Who Voted for Clinton’s Revolution?

By Patrick J. Buchanan 1997

A week ago, Bill Clinton invited a dozen African American columnists to the White House to brief them on his racial goals. “We want to become a multiracial, multiethnic society,” the president confided. “This will arguably be the third great revolution …. to prove that we literally can live without … having a dominant European culture.”

Clinton then headed west to exult in the fact that California’s white folks are about to lose their majority status: “Within the next three years here in California, no single race or ethnic group will make up a majority of the state’s population. … A half century from now, there will be no majority race in America.”

O happy day! Clearly, Clinton did not much like the ethnic makeup of the country he grew up in, 90 percent of which was of European descent. Gratified that our white population has fallen below 75 percent, he looks forward to the day when it drops below 50. Perhaps we can have a Bicentennial-type celebration.

Bill militarized the border honey bunch. If you care about reality then you should look up what he said when he was running and the actual policies he implemented.

I don't care about whatever bullshit rhetoric people spew, that's for idiots and rubes. If you don't agree with that then we just think about politics in a fundamentally different way.

I can understand why people say that. There is no question that he is hyper ambitious and loves power and money, and I won't pretend that he is some sort of saint. That doesn't mean he didn't want to pursue the best policies though, in most cases that is how great leaders operate. Julius Caesar, and no I am not saying Clinton is his equal, was like this. Hyper ambitious, but a populist with a bunch of actual reform plans. That isn't a problem imho.
