Opening up trade hadn't had a similar effect before, even with relatively developed countries (to China.) Obviously there was some of that, but in general Americans benefited across classes. The shock caused by opening trade with China is another story, the evidence that it caused huge dislocation and social problems is pretty clear and there was a landmark paper about it a few years ago. Probably because China has a reasonable average IQ, which means that it stable and effective unskilled labor relative to others. That might not be what made it different, but it's my guess.
