My dog was fine health wise other than some ear infections for 4-5 years. He’s since been diagnosed with disc disease. he had a grade 4 slipped disc last year that required a $7000 surgery. He’s since reaggravated it and now we do laser therapy and he’s on a cocktail of meds to manage his pain and is confined in his crate most of the time.

It’s pretty miserable for him and for us but I can’t put him down because he’s not even 9 yet. The laser therapy seems to be working and I’m hoping to get him back to short walks in a few months.

If it’s a 50/50 success rate and he’d need a wheelchair to get around and can’t walk again, a much tougher call.

I don’t agree with those who do expensive surgeries to prolong a dog’s life for like 6 months (seems mainly because owner doesn’t want to let go), but I also don’t agree with owners who will put dogs down when an expensive surgery has high chance of success.

It is a lot of work integrating pets and young children. You see those videos on the internet about how they all love each other and they’re all lies. Also your dog will absolutely hate your infant for at least a year due to the crying. My dog would just go another room to get away. A more aggressive dog would act out more. Wouldn’t recommend a pet until kids are at least 5-6 years old.

As for finances, obviously you shouldn’t do $5-10k surgery if it means you can’t put food on the table for the rest of your family, but also why get a dog in the first place if that’s your financial situation. I do think such dog owners are irresponsible.
