The embassy will be relocated on May 16, two days after the U.S. moves its embassy to the capital

Guatemala will move their embassy to Jerusalem on May 16, two days after the U.S. moves theirs, according to senior Israeli officials. The embassy will be moved to the Jerusalem Technology Park, a high-tech industrial park in the Malkha neighborhood in southwest Jerusalem, the officials said.

Jimmy Morales, president of Guatemala, first announced the move in a speech at the AIPAC policy conference in Washington this March, saying they would move their embassy two days after the U.S. moved theirs.

"I'm sure many more countries will follow suit shortly," Morales said.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Morales during AIPAC, where he thanked the Guatemalan president for recognizing Jerusalem as capital of Israel. Guatemala was one of seven states that voted with the U.S. in a UN vote to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, along with Honduras, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, and Togo.

When Guatemala originally announced the embassy move, in December, Netanyahu thanked Morales in a speech at the Knesset. “Last night I spoke with my friend, Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales,” he said. “I thanked him for Guatemala’s support for us in the UN vote and I expressed my hope that he would follow in the footsteps of U.S. President Donald Trump, recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and begin to move the embassy to it.”

He added: “I told you recently that there will be other countries that would recognize Jerusalem and announce the transfer of their embassies to it. Well here is the second country and I reiterate: It is only the beginning and it is important.”
