The whole "city on the edge of the apocalypse" is a rich trope; I liked how it was explored in Percy's "Dead Lands" a few years ago too, although that turned into a crossing-the-country narrative toward the back half of the book; also recalls Justin Cronin's first book in his Passage trilogy.
