But should the rankings be trusted?

The answer is no, according to many law enforcement officials, criminologists and statisticians.

The latest ranking, this time by Law Street Media, a national legal and policy website, comes after the FBI released its “Preliminary Semiannual Uniform Crime Report” last week. The report is compiled from statistics provided to the FBI by more than 12,000 law enforcement agencies. Law Street Media used the violent crime statistics—murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault— to rank the “most dangerous” cities with populations under 200,000.

New Haven was pegged as the No. 2 most dangerous, Hartford No. 4 and Bridgeport No. 6.

The Law Street Media rankings are an update of a list produced by the site in the fall. The rankings point out that crime is on the decline in many of the cities it claims to be “most dangerous,” including the three in Connecticut. Rape is up in all three, but that is the result in a change in how the FBI defines rape.

Experts, including the FBI and the police chiefs in cities that often find themselves at the top of these lists, are quick to debunk the rankings as simplistic and unreliable.

The FBI, in releasing the report, warns that these type of rankings, “do not provide insight into the numerous variables that shape crime in a given town, city, county, state, tribal area, or region.

“These rankings lead to simplistic and/or incomplete analyses that can create misleading perceptions that adversely affect communities and their residents,” the FBI states. “Only through careful study and analyses into the range of unique conditions affecting each local law enforcement jurisdiction can data users create valid assessments of crime.”

Despite the critics, the rankings are often picked up by both local and national media outlets and spread through social media.

Bridgeport Police Chief Joseph Gaudett expressed his frustration in a statement to WFSB.

“I think I speak for police chiefs across the country when I say ‘studies’ like this don’t dignify a response,” Gaudett told the news station Thursday. “Yet, here we are again. A string of these junk studies come out every year even though the FBI implores people against it because they are overly simplistic and utterly misleading.”

Another recent report, based on 2012 statistics, from CQ Press, ranked New Haven as No. 26 in violent crime nationwide.

“If you truly compare cities on an apples-to-apples basis, Connecticut’s cities are all among the safest in the United States,” said Mark Abraham, executive director of DataHaven, in response to that study. “That’s not to say there aren’t certain neighborhoods in our cities and towns that have greatly elevated crime.”

In 2011, Abraham wrote an op-ed further explaining why he finds these rankings unreliable.
