None. As long as it's totally intrastate, then Congress doesn't have authority. The only involvement they currently have is regarding Indian gaming (under the IGRA), and even then they just delegated it to states. What this ruling says is that they can't tell the states that it can't be authorized within a given state.

They have to come out against it for optics reasons. Pro sports aversion to betting goes back to the Black Sox scandal -- the last thing a sport needs is a scandal involving throwing games. More betting equals more of a chance of pressure to throw games.

Also, it is not like betting on the NFL was difficult.

Yeah but even going back to the Black Sox, it's usually the sports books that find this stuff. I believe that's what happened with the CCNY point-shaving scandal. It's individual bettors and independent bookies that cause trouble here, not the big sports-betting operations (even when it was the mafia running things).

Sports closely linked to gambling historically became associated with rigged outcomes, organized crime, and general seediness. If people start to think players are throwing games it could devastate the sport. That's why baseball fucking nuked Pete Rose and the Black Sox.

I'm surprised it took this long - the fact that this was illegal in the first place is incredibly dumb. And as an added bonus, the impact if this will probably do more to cripple organized crine than the FBI and state police have been able to accomplish in decades.

No betting on New Jersey college teams, so still have to make your Princeton lax bets in Vegas.

Also, no betting on events in NJ means no bets on Giants/Jets home games.

SCOTUS struck down federal law that prohibited states from changing their laws w/r/t sports betting

So does that mean that any state that doesn't have a law prohibiting sports gambling is now a state where sports gambling is legal? And if you're in a state that does happen to have a law banning it you're fucked?

I just skimmed the decision, but if it was already legal when the federal law took effect then it would stay legal.

States should now be free to legalize sports betting if they want. I think a bunch of states are already lined up and ready to do so.

If it was already legal when the federal law took effect it was already legal today. What PASPA did was try to basically freeze sports gambling law as it existed at the time of passage. Nevada has had single-game wagering, a few others had ridiculous parlay or pool games under the auspices of their lotteries; nobody else could authorize anything (I'm not counting the New Jersey exception that wound up being a moot point). And what this decision said was that the federal government can't prevent a state from authorizing something that's not preempted by federal law. Casino gaming isn't a federal legal issue; after all, look at how many states now offer full-service casinos compared to 30 years ago. States have always been able to authorize blackjack.

No, it means that a state can pass a law allowing sports gambling. Under PASPA, that was illegal. If you have a state law banning it you're fucked, in the same way that if you live in a state that doesn't allow lotteries or casino gaming (e.g., Hawaii or Utah) you're fucked too. They're saying that this is the province of the states and the federal government can't tell states that they're not allowed to legalize types of gambling.

NJ started challenging it in 2012

because leagues were never on board with legalization and without them, it's nearly impossible. it took the OTT craze/cord cutting to dry up network licensing fees

the hilarious thing is that a NJ senator (bill bradley) is who pushed for paspa in the first place. it grandfathered in the 4 states with sb already on the books and gave NJ a one year window to enact their own sb law but they missed the opportunity. then 20 years later christie made this his cause
