He calls a partner I work for about a procedural issue his company is facing (involving accepting service of process but that's not relevant). His industry gets sued a lot. Partner tells me to look into it. What I've done for a couple years in biglaw is, for easy questions, I have an Avvo account that I post questions to. Typically 4-5 different shitlawyers with 25 years of experience respond. Avvo lawyers don't give you a lot, just a teaser, but I ask several parts of the question and get a full answer by piecing it together. I do this for state court procedure, criminal law (for pro bono), basic black letter law - I post all this on Avvo and the lawyers respond. Probably a bad habit. I guess I'm "outsourcing" some of my biglaw work to Avvo.

I posted the state court procedural issue to Avvo the inhouse counsel asked the partner about and had a few attorneys respond. I picked the best one and sent the inhouse counsel the answer, but made it look like I had written it. Inhouse counsel apparently googled what I'd sent and my Avvo question popped right up as the first result. He called the partner and said that if I was googling his questions and copying from Avvo he'd be forced to cut off our work. The partner asked me how much time I billed to this and another email about this "potentially serious" issue.

So I can tell the partner that the Avvo poster was me and he would probably get angry that I'm posting my biglaw work to Avvo for answers, or I can act like I just googled the answer and didn't spend much time on the question which makes me look lazy. What would you do?

I would say that you did google it at first, but also confirmed it with X book or statute, etc. to make sure that was the right answer.
