A lot of those guys work from home a majority of the time, so if you're in a low COL area it's not bad.
Also, if you want to be a patent attorney, having a few years as an examiner is great. I know several folks who did a few years as an examiner, went to a mediocre LS (not true TTTs, but lower T1 and T2)--often on at least partial scholarship--and then did biglaw or one of the "boutique" IP firms like Fish, Finnegan, or the like.

yea, but after 10 years in the industry a CS worker is basically obsolete and out of a jerb, because he's only managed to master java 6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,13.5, 18... when the industry is on java 28
meanwhile the PTO guy... he's churning $160k working at home and 8 weeks of vacation, sick time, plus pension guaranteed.
PTO guy wins in this case, it's all about that low wage compounding, and annuity into perpetuity
