Couldn't the internet render college useless?

Seems like buying a degree is mainly just about a credential, the education you could pursue for free by yourself with just self-discipline and a wifi connection on any subject. |

The reason it's (usually) a good idea to invest in a college education if you have the money and abilities - is to earn the degree which acts as your signaling device to employers, who require a degree for good jobs.
The Will Hunting route won't yield you interviews let alone a job for the overwhelming majority of people.

ideally you want a 4-year degree for the very best and brightest, and for people perhaps who want to enter certain professions that require advanced schooling, like engineer, doctor, lawyer, professor, etc.
but the more you limit a 4-year degree, the more valuable it becomes as a signal and the more people want it.
isn't that how we essentially got to this point to begin with?
we'd have to somehow artificially limit the number of degrees given every year, and short of not providing public funds for attendance, which would help but not eliminate the problem, i'm not sure how we'd do that. i certainly wouldn't want the government deciding who could get these valuable degrees. |

But there's no incentive for employers to do this - because why bare the costs of testing / sorting candidates when colleges are currently doing it well enough for you.
Also the value of college degrees to employers isn't the knowledge / skills that are gained (although that's certainly part of it) - rather the value is in the signaling mechanism it provides to filter / sort candidates. |
