But monarchies, especially in the modern era. We have one random family with special status that represents a country, "rules" a country symbolically or in some actuality and they are loaded with castles and status and money and people are supposed to care. Where did they come from and who installed them? It seems sketchier, even than dictators who are at least honest about the brutality that got them to where they are. Monarchs were just as cunning and brutal but put a veneer of respectability over it. |
