is the wine better than what you can get at stores? do they give you a bunch of free samples? or do you just pay 5x as much for the privilege of sitting in the sun without the stench of poors?

The wine is often more expensive than it is sold for in stores, although it depends on the winery. It's fun because wineries are usually in scenic places with plenty of space to lounge about and socialize.

think of a winery as a bar that is set in beautiful rolling hills countryside where u can bring ur dog (& ur dog will actually love it instead of secretly suffering from loud music in a bar) & it's not surrounded by AIDS infected libs and homeless. also u can do stuff like throw a frisbee or play horseshoes.

every time i've been to a winery it's been full of shrews taking photos and fags who enable them. i get the appeal but it's undone by the crowd. i'd rather just go to a buddy's country house and get drunk together there. not sure why a "winery" needs to enter the equation ever

sometimes it's nice to try all the wines a particular winery is offering. they can usually speak to the wines very particularly and give you some inside knowledge as you try them.

also, i've been to some where they give you a multi-course lunch and the wines are paired to the food, all in a beautiful setting. not a bad way to spend an afternoon imo.

They are, along with breweries, and excuse to day drink.

No one would ever tell people they are going to bars on a Saturday afternoon or something, without it being some occassion. You'd sound like an alcoholic. But say you are going to a "brewery" or "winery" and it sounds normal and chill.

i'd be willing to give it a go. though, in general, i hate "tour" type activities. i have been on a brewery tour or two, though. i couldn't care less about the tour, but i loved the drinking.

anyway, in the past when i've been invited to wineries, i was usually at another girl's house, so it was a no go.

They can be 180.

Every few months there's an anti-wine thread on xo with links to a blind tasting, but it makes people sound like joyless faggots -- let people enjoy going to a winery. A lot of it is the place, the people, the story, the history, the approach -- it's not whether some snarky millennial homo in a conference room can tell you that some random $125 bottle is "better" than some $6 bottle (when it's quite probable that the $6 bottle is more enjoyable at the time, anyway, and that's not an indictment of higher-end wine).

Nah, man, the story can mean something. Stepping out of Napa and Sonoma, Ridge Monte Bello is 30 mins from my house and has a long, interesting history -- there's a reason why they do what they do right there. Same with Calera. There are people and personalities behind these places.

There are PE-backed shiny places and those are hollow.

Fair enough. There are hundreds of wineries that will sell you a very similar $60 bottle of Russian River Valley Pinot -- I like associating the memories of having been there, heard the owner or winemaker talk about it, etc.

One of the few places where you can get shit-tanked canned with your wife during the day and not be nagged and complained at all day. For reasons totally unknown, wineries create a chemical change in naggy wives that make them, for a very short period of time, fun to be around.

EDIT: I have even heard rumors of married people having sex after going to a winery. This is strong stuff here.

The shrewbait piece aka the "tasting room" is generally highly profitable - lots of smaller wine brands don't even get the opportunity to suck enough distributor cock to get into many/any stores or restaurants, and for those ones the tasting room shrew traffic is basically the only way of staying in business

no, they mostly destroyed the forested corridor between santa rosa and calistoga, along with about 1/4 of santa rosa itself. another fire burned a good chunk of napa, but only destroyed 5 or 6 wineries. there may be significant smoke damage to the wine, but it's too early to tell.

Most of the people trolling for it ITT are all boring marriedmos who need safe, acceptable events where they can drink away their pain.

Then you have those who laud the VIEWS, as if wineries have a monopoly on the countryside. But tbf, it's understandable that city roaches wouldn't have organic access to this and need to do what they're used to doing -- consume the thicc cock of GC in order to have fun.
