Felt like I was going to fall off the treadmill @ 12mph. Had to take it down to 11.5 and barely made it through 4 quarter miles with quarter mile walks in between.

And I probably cheated the first few intervals b/c it takes the treadmill like .05 miles to get all the way up to speed.

Not sure what brand of treadmill you’re using, but 12MPh on any of them seems unsafe; let alone a gym treadmill with dubious maintenance. I never go above 10mph and really anything over 9 is kind of sketch.

Just whatever my apartment gym has. I'd never considered that danger--always assumed if I fell off it would be because I was too slow to keep up.

I've had a couple of treadmills just decide to stop on me on speeds lower than that, and it is not fun.

I’ve had them stop many times. I’ve also tripped up and fallen off one, landed hard at like 7.5-8 mph

12 mph would hurt

cr treadmill is good proxy for running if absolutely necessary (weather) but it is NOT the real thing. go to your local college/HS track and impress some co-eds

if I had to drive 15 minutes to the track and run, I probably wouldn't run at all. Also I usually run at night.

I'll admit the treadmill at my house may not be 100% accurate. But that's as fast as it goes as I run 1:15 intervals at that speed.

i've been clear the whole time that I am running on a treadmill.

The best I can do on a track is a single 6 minute mile give or take and a single 400 at 59 seconds (with vomit and puckering asshold).

Do you not have a local high school nearby? They almost all have their tracks open to the public.

During LS my training workout was: warm up: skip, jog, fartlek 1200m; 800m <2:20; 400m <60S; 400m <60s; 800m <2:30. 3X week. 3 miles runs <6min/mile 3X week. And on the long run days, I went to gym and did strength work: chins/dips/some bench/some squat/lunges/boxing.

My body looked like a shorter version of Ashton Eaton, and I could do anything with it. Fighting shape, dangerous.

not random hills? The treadmill is trying to trick my wife into thinking that walking at a moderate pace up hills is best for fat burning.

If you have hills accessible, do like 10 sprints up them. Add a weight vest over time if you want.

I did run a mile at 7 mph at a 10% incline which is pretty good I think.

Do that over that 12MPH bullshit. It's what I do when I have to use a treadmill. I'm early 40's and still run low/mid 12's 100m/USATF coach.

long hill intervals are crrr. you'll feel like death at the end but it's the best form of hiit and builds leg strength at the same time. again, real hills are way better than the treadmill and don't walk go as hard as possible.

you metabolize glucose almost entirely when working at higher intensities compared to long slow steady state cardio work where you body uses more fat for energy. If all you're doing is sprints/v02 max work then your body will only use the glucose stored in your muscles for energy

during the workout this is true. this kind of high intensity training changes your body's metabolism during the recovery period and more fat is burned and muscle is built (which in turn causes more calories to be burned at rest over time).

also, unless you are glycogen depleted, you still need to run well over 10 miles before you start to burn fat when doing liss running.

the other thing to consider is how much time you are spending doing this shit.

My normal work out with "sprints" takes about 25 minutes. Doing the slow hill run takes longer.

do hill sprints, best of both worlds. you'll be amazed how difficult 8-10 sprints up a 150-200m hill can be.
