Date: May 22nd, 2018 12:23 PM Author: Navy frisky lodge i was walking through this analysis with someone who is 30 and i think the process creates the culture. we were right on the exact end of the unprofessionalized & decentralized application process. yes, there was SOME acceptance of the common app and some professional college tutoring, but in the main most just did what the guys the year before did with very little guidance and no real internet to think of. i remember hearing that using the common app (first year of decent widespread use) would hurt your apps. so no one used it. so you had to do a lot more lifting to apply to any school...especially since you had to type/word process your apps. it was very time intensive.
once things got centralized, there was a "smoothing" effect on the kind of students these places took in and produced. |

but i think it's more than that. as the culture has become more super striver, prospective students (especially at the top end) are autistically looking at colleges in terms of their prestige and US News ranking.
whereas in the past i feel like top students would pick a set of schools of varying prestige levels that fit the student, today it seems like top students will just apply to a whole mess of top schools and then will maybe just choose the one that fits best in a small 3-5 school prestige band. |

being old blue is great. being new blue seems like masochism. |
