Any historian worth his salt will tell you that Korea has, in some capacity, acted as a vassal state and buffer kingdom for China since the Tang dynasty at least.

Korea was a frontier that helped protect the inland Chinese coast against depredations of pirates and seaborne threats such as the modern day Japanese. Little has changed in this respect.
