For me I think that it is pretty damming that there has been no concerted mainstream, publicized academic or social/media effort to describe Wiemar Germany in the popular arena. You simply will not see a TED talk about this.

Why is this? It would invariably require an assessment of the conditions that the German people were subjected to that basically enabled the Holocaust to happen.

In the media currently, the Holocaust is presented as some sort of irrational, insane evil visited upon the Jewish people of Europe like a plague that appeared out of a vacuum, like some sort of meteor strike or earthquake calamity.

Rarely, almost never, are the economic and social conditions that created and enabled it discussed, which begs the question - why would they be? If they were, there would then be something that would make people wonder if the Holocaust was a result of legitimate issues. I myself believe that the Holocaust (no matter what the scale of it was) was obviously the wrong response to what the problem was - but I can understand how it happened given my interest in monetary theory and examination of hyperinflation episodes across history and across the globe.

One thesis I read about Wiemar Germany that crystalized this for me and which was particularly horrifying in its nearness to everyday life was a social/economic history on a basic, day to day level during Wiemar Germany. The author examined shopping lists, newspaper articles, rent rolls, food prices - the basics of society during Wiemar and as hyper-inflation progressed or should I say metastasized.

People living in cities without substantial resources or international connections were slowly ground down into nothing during the Weimar due to hyperinflation. Their labor was worth nothing because they were paid in increasingly worthless currency. At the end, they could no longer feed or even clothe themselves properly. Pregnant women were reduced to prostituting themselves in the streets in order to feed their unborn children. Pensioners and veterans who were living on a fixed income saw the purchasing power all but eliminated as hyper inflation dragged on (an apt example is your monthly check being able to buy four loafs of bread a month one year , one a month the next year, then a cracker a month the following year).

The thesis cited newspaper articles of old people selling everything they had to feed themselves and then killing themselves when they only had their bed and killing themselves via gas before the utilities were about to be shut off. Widowers selling their necklaces one gold link at a time until they killed themselves. Victor Frankel talks about this type of living driving people mad during the Holocaust in Mans Search of Meaning, and this is the very type of existence that Germans living in cities were subjected to for years. Those who were living in rural Germany was spared the most vicious privations of hunger because they had food security, though they still suffered.

What was most terrifying to me however was reading the accumulated years worth of press releases from the Wiemar Central bank and government - of how they just madly printed money with absurd and highly academic confidence in the currency being able to stabilize and that it was "just around the corner" - for years, as they justified their truly insane behavior. Those same echoes of Wiemar began to grow louder during the second Obama term as interest rates remained low (which allowed capital holders to replace workers and accumulate even more) - every time the Fed or the ECB announced that interest rates would stay where they were and how they had the utmost confidence in their mandate a feeling of dread grew within me.

Now, not only were the people in Wiemar being destroyed by hyperinflation - their culture at the same time also became deeply deeply sick because of the inequality and privations suffered by the average person. Prostitution, drug abuse, gross sexualization and perversion of the society became normal and accepted. There was even a museum dedicated to abnormal sexuality created during this period. I believe that this is where the Nazi concept of "degenerate art" arose - as a reaction to Wiemar's excess.

Now of course, the Jews of Europe looted Germany during this period on many many levels. Any rational actor in their position would. I would have done the same thing if I possessed the intellect, connections and guile - especially if I had a cultural advantage that involved having family all over the world and being able to transact in portable forms of wealth like gold/jewelry that were resistant to inflation.

Inside of the Wiemar state corruption ran rampant as the hyperinflation dragged on. Nepotism flourished, those with gold reserves of any substantial kind had the ability to control the economy with simple currency trading and most of these individuals were Jews - simply because of the fact that they were in the "right place" at the "right time" - if it were another group with similar features and not Jews, the succeeding political party would have exterminated that group en masse instead of the Jews. It would be natural for a German to resent a Jew in these conditions - particularly as they began to see their society crumble and yet more and more Jews in prominent government positions dictating policy, teaching in universities, working (and earning meaningful wages) in industries and promoting prostitution and drug abuse in the culture. On a more pedestrian level, an average Jew with a small amount of gold and silver was suddenly the richest man in his neighborhood or town - often through circumstance and no exceptional activity of his own - his wealth simply was not stolen from him by the lies and greed of the Wiemar government and other European powers that foisted reparations onto Germany after the first World War.

Wiemar Germany was too eerily similar to the United States and much of Europe during the 2008-2016 period, however it never got as extreme as Wiemar did - thank God. I personally thought that if interest rates remained at absolute zero for another 4-8 years we would have suffered permanent social damage that could have created a major situation.
