Had food.poisoning and this shit started up out of nowhere. Never dealt with this before. I work out, not overweight, healthy diet. Doctor prescibed nexium but online sources say its just like finasteride for your stomach e.g. can never stop once you start.

Cutting to zero the items they warn against (coffee, soda, chocolate) and eating a more natural diet (no preservatives, no ingredients that are difficult to pronounce) will help. PPIs do cause memory loss—I think those studies are legit—and that is another reason to avoid the drugs.

I second Gregor's recommendations

Unless this has been going on for a while, do not do a PPI type drug. While they can help in some cases, doctors hand them out like antibiotics for the common cold virus.

---

Spend a month on an mostly vegan diet. Maybe eggs and limited amounts of cheese are safe. Have yogurt once or twice per day. (The condition may be related to problematic bacteria levels, which yogurt can help with.)

Find out the PH level of your water supply. Slightly basic water helps a lot. Avoid acidic things.

Coffee, Cola, chocolate, and alcohol are a major cause of this problem. To a lesser extent spicy/oily foods.

Coffee is a big one. Cut it out immediately. Tea also. You can substitute sparingly with decaf versions. Don't eat dark chocolate at all. Substitute sparingly with milk chocolate. Don't drink cola. Substitute sparingly with Fanta, Sprite etc. Better still, drink home-made juices (no added sugar). Cut out alcohol and cigs.

Eat more greens and less pizza and hot dogs. Skip dressings on your salad or use sparingly.

Do not eat before you sleep or take a nap. Also get a sleep wedge, so that your head is at a higher level compared to your stomach.

Reduce stress. You may be living an unhealthy life all this while without any GERD. Stress can spark this shit overnight. Do you recall being stressed in the last few days?

I'll agree with most of this but only to an extent. It can be triggered (or not triggered) by lots of things. Try cutting out coffee, and see if it helps. Same for the other things. You basically have to figure out what's causing it.

Also, it can sometimes be a physical issue, like a hiatal hernia or something along those lines, in which case your food intake isn't going to impact it a ton. See if you can isolate the cause or causes on your own, and if nothing works then see a doctor.

I personally prefer Prilosec to the other PPIs, but YMMV.

Had this really bad last year and looked up ideas on my number one source for medical problems: bodybuilding.com forums. The only thing I did to rectify was started eating a spoonful of yogurt a day

My gastro doc has said that they used to be considered fine but there's evolving research about it screwing up bone density and stuff like that.

Really it depends on why you're getting the reflux. When I started getting it, I tried cutting stuff out, which didn't work, then eventually went to the doc. He did an endoscopy and basically said that it was a physical issue manifesting itself, and food wouldn't make much of a difference; it was either PPIs or surgery, and at the time he recommended PPIs. He later changed his rec to surgery based on the aforementioned research.

It's planned. The PPIs work for me for now so I haven't been in a huge rush, but probably this summer.

Not bad but not anything I want to deal with if not treated. When it started, I tried cutting out tons of stuff, but eventually figured out that the only thing that really screws me up is citrus. Orange juice, lemonade, etc., make things pretty awful.

But otherwise, no matter what I eat, if I don't take something then it gets uncomfortable.
