why? why do we *need* Japanese cars?
why do we *need* to trade higher-wages/jobs for cheap chinese-manufactured trinkets? what is gained? it seems like a wash, at best
we have the best people, we make the best stuff, we innovate. if we pull up the drawbridge and rely on ourselves, we'll be fine. it's the rest of the world that is fucked, without us.

1. American cars suck
2. Your wages won't go up just because cheap plastic crap now costs 2x as much.
3. We are at full employment. Who will take these imaginary new jobs?
All tariffs do is create inflation. It's a tax.

1. no they don't. and American car manufacturing is constrained by other factors. if tomorrow, high-end european cars were outlawed in the US, a market for a superior American-made alternative would lead to its development.
2. uh, what? the entire incentive for moving industry overseas was dirt-cheap labor. when it was American-based, wages were high.
3. people who would prefer having a good job, over driving part-time for Lyft.

Why would you ever use the word "need" in this context?
That's TTT retard thinking.
"Look at me! I can shift the ground at will, play No True Scotsman, and either ignore preferences, in general, or smuggle in mine own while denying yours without justification!"

Satisfaction of preferences and desires. Pretty simple.
And your response is, "I don't care about what other people like."
Deep conversation, man.

Yes, people want Camrys more than Fusions.
"'Do people actually DESIRE/WANT/BADLY REQUIRE having access to shitty, poorly-made Chinese vacuum cleaners, etc,"
They're purchasing them in the face of alternatives. "Yes" is a stronger conclusion than "no."

I'm all for improving deals, there's no question some of them should probably be renegotiated.
But what's the point of protectionism?
The bottom line is the genie of the global economy is never going back in the bottle. People also like to buy a lot of cheap stuff. They don't want prices to go up, and outsourcing keeps costs low.
Interestingly, manufacturing is still tremendous in the US and was coming back to us in many ways as the cost effectiveness and returns in terms of money in quality were narrowing, so why not just make it at home?
Finally, automation is going to decimate more jobs than outsourcing ever did. Get ready for that problem - it's going to put way more people out of work. It's only a matter of time until your uber drives itself. Hell, even an anesthesiologist can be replaced by a robot that monitors vitals and regulates the anesthesia accordingly.

Ok President Pumo, you're going to go tit for tat with every other major economy and compel/punish every business attempting to be competitive in a global marketplace?
Maybe if less of our people weren't fat, retarded and on drugs we could make more stuff here. Do you know a lot of jobs go unfilled because employers can't find people that pass drug tests?
