i support anything that weakens 'globalism,' that weakens foreign enemies (why have we made totalitarian-nationalistic China wealthy by prostrating ourselves economically at their feet for 25 years? what strategic interest does this serve?), and strengthens the self-sufficiency capacity of the Nation (rather than enriching the psychopathic transnational [[[corporations]]]).

we need to rebalance the system. economic patriotism.

Tariffs increase prices for American consumers, which disproportionately "immiserate" America's poor. All so a few American union factory workers can be paid an above market wage.

so having protectionism/industry in china is GOOD for chinese people, making them unimaginably prosperous.

but having industry in America is bad for american people, and makes them poor and miserable.

got it. tariffs, industrialization, etc must be another of those things, like border walls, that is ONLY bad for white countries, i guess.

No, just high-end labor generally. A lot of manufacturing isn't desirable to have in the USA due to environmental issues. And even beyond that, labor costs are a high percentage of total manufacturing cost right now--so usually it makes more sense to do it someplace where the minimum wage is 0

Dude, yes. The US manufacturing base is FAR more advanced than that of China and dominates the highest end of the market. I support these tariffs because FUCK CHINA, but that doesn’t mean that the US isn’t the world’s largest and most advanced manufacturer.

No. The argument is that even if China is putting tariffs on our goods, it is good for US consumers to place zero tariffs on Chinese goods

Or do you think US consumers are so starved for goods that American policies should promote the acquisition of more goods?

Me? I think consumers in America are doing fine, but American manufacturing could use a boost.

1, workers are generally also consumers. 2, it's a small number of factory jobs that get saved by tariffs. 3, the domestic factory jobs wouldn't exist but for distorting the underlying economics; these workers should seek work in different fields & the world gets more efficient.

i know the theoretical arugment that the nation as a whole is better off. we heard that over and over during the NAFTA debates. we also heard the Bush's and Clinton's and Gore's promise that those who were left less well off would be protected because we'd make sure the increased profits would go to them.

but that was a fucking lie and we are incapable of doing that.

Also a good point. Perot was closest to the truth, as the debate famously showed. "Giant sucking sound" of manufacturing job loss.

Why should Americans who aren't in manufacturing have to subsidize the manufacturing sector? This hurts the many to profit the few with sweet union factory jobs

Build private public partnerships of the sort that actually build factories in a world where a proper industrial supply chain is a $10 billion commitment and can't be done by the private sector properly. China does what it does in 2018 by throwing money at cos and not merely offering slave labor.

Right. One would think all of the complaints about IP theft would result in, e.g., more semiconductor fabs built in the USA.

States are doing some of this but the feds seem to be missing a big chance. See also infrastructure.

Chinese fabs are generations behind US fabs. China is stuck at 28nm. The US is at 10nm. The best fabs are American, Taiwanese and S.Korean. China ain't a top 3. And Russia is even worse. They are stuck at 45nm and limited volume at 45nm at that. Mass production is at 65nm. China ain't no threat. S. Korea however....

The USA needs inflation. Get rid of all that debt. The dollar will ultimately revalue against a basket of currencies/commodities.

Why would anyone NOT support them, other than being part of the "resistance"? What interest does being pro free trade serve at this point other than ramping consumerism.
