i opened beautifully. but the old judge was pissed as fuck that morning, and seemed extra offended to have to deal with a fresh-faced young attorney he didn't know in his hallowed courtroom. the judge gave me a hard time from the start. then, as i questioned our witness, the partner slid me a piece of paper telling me to do something procedural.

i hesitated, because i didn't think it was necessary, but hell if i'm going to disrespect my boss. so i followed the partner's instructions. the judge glared at me, nostrils flared, and said as nastily as possible, "Well, dr. thunder, as you should be aware, you do not have to do that in this court." the judge then proceeded to just destroy the hell out of me every chance he got, intentionally trying to humiliate me in front of our clients and an absolutely packed courtroom.

Partner dropped in and informed he was taking a pro bono client and I would be helping him. This guy had a legit claim against the .gov and they gave him a reasonable offer. The problem is the client was completely unreasonable and because we were pro bono didn't care how much time we spent on this fucking matter. So we ended up in this protracted struggle for no real reason. Then the partner fucking laterals and doesn't take the pro bono client with him so I'm stuck handling this on my own until another partner takes over. It was seriously hour long phone calls where he'd bitch about how the pledge of allegiance promises justice for all and if he didn't when it wasn't justice and we should put that in the brief. He also posited a massive conspiracy against him and wanted us to represent him in that lawsuit too. And he was sure his life story would be a book someday, so he wanted to be sure he retained the right to publicity. Truly shitty.

I ended up lateraling myself and they became somebody else's problem. Still, pure year of hell. The guy eventually won and received a judgment for the amount the government offered to just settle for.

- Taking a 45 minute call from a partner, who was then golfing, the sole purpose of which was to dictate a meaningless 2/3 paragraph email to me to send. He would dictate, ask me to read it back, suggest completely pointless things (such as "is there a comma after the "however" that started the second sentence? Yes? Okay, remove that and read it back. No wait, just start the sentence with "although" with no comma. Read it back for me"); and he finally very carefully laid out the order of seniority by which I needed to cc the client recipients. He was actually a nice guy, and it wasn't so much a personal low point as a moment of realization that I do not want to do what I just did for a living, and I never wanted to become anyone like that partner who cared about such things.

After 4-5 months of no new clients, no ability to network, courts all shut down, my clients I took with me not needing much work, I didn't qualify for any of the PPP loans or any of that assistance shit due to the timing of starting my firm (also my regular state assistance application got completely fucked up and ignored and I never got any relief money) and me making like $2-3k a month in revenue, I seriously wondered if I need to give up the solo dream and apply for a job. This would have been a serious failure in my mind. Then by December I settled my first ever PI case for policy limits and by January 2021 my revenue finally started going up and I started getting more clients.

2. Took a shitty PI case to trial first year solo. Little 8 year old girl hurt on go kart track but track didnt really do anything wrong. I argued she should not have been allowed on track if she couldnt steer, but in reality her white trash mom let her go.
