Living dangerously and taking two weeks off in August to go to Italy. Likely proposing to my GF as well

We want to hit up Florence, Tuscany, Rome, and the Amalfi coast. I am thinking city/beach/city so Florence / Amalfi / Rome where I can fly out direct. Or is that retarded and I should just end the trip in Amalfi and fly out of Naples?

How many days do I need in Rome and Florence?

What are the must-do things in Tuscany?

Do I stay in Positano or Amalfi?

Are Pompeii or Herculaneum worth going to?

*Shines RSF spotlight into the sky*

Can you spare 3 days for Rome and 2 for Florence? Def stay in Positano and or Ravello instead of Amalfi. if you're intending to ball out w you financebro paper Le Sirenuse in Positano, Hotel Caruso in Ravelo. Pompeii and Herculaneum are BOTH 100% worth going to. You can get by Rome to Naples in about 55m by train. I would say take an afternoon train to Naples. Go to Da Michele and Di Matteo for lunch and dinner, stay overnight at Hotel Excelsion and LOL about how that's where Tony and crew stayed on the Sopranos (COMMANDATORI!) have some campari or aperol spritz and have the driver get you bright and early to go to Pomeii and Herculaneum on the way to dropping you on Amalfi coast.

IDK what you have planned for Tuscany, but Positano is 2 days, Capri about the same. I would really work in Hotel Caruso in Ravello if you can. Probably not as good for IG as Positano for the proposal from gf's perspective, but it's beautiful there.

You only need 2-3 days in Rome.

When in Tuscany, get out of the major cities and into the countryside. As an alternative, I highly recommend Spoletto in Umbria. We got married there and the countryside is awesome if youre with the GF.

RSF says Positano gets overcrowded and recommends good alternatives.

Venice is a shitshow in the summer and I recommend avoiding.

Herculaneum is the way to go. It is right in town and has better preserved buildings.

St Peters / Vatican / Sistine Chapel is one day I presume

Colosseum / Forum / Pantheon another day

What else should I hit up and what should I ignore from these travel sites

i enjoyed biking down the appian way in rome. also bar san calisto in trastavere is where my italian friends liked to drink. it was full of young people and everyone just spills out into the piazza and drinks outside.

that being said, italy sounds miserable in august. i just went 2 weeks ago and the heat was enough to make you sweat even at rest. your girl will not enjoy being outside in the roman forum and pompeii while sweltering in the sun. not to mention italians have a couple weeks in august as holiday, so every place is full of throngs, especially amalfitano

Yeah its gonna be hot as fuck but what can I do? It's the only month I can take vacation. If she complains about the heat I'll tell her we just spent 6 days at the Amalfi coast and Capri and to shut her trap

Thx for the bar rec and bike rec. That ride would indeed be cool

just a couple quick notes:

i loved staying in oltrarno in florence and highly recommend it. there's far more going on at night for drinks/dinner, and it's still only a ~10 minute walk away from all of the touristy stuff you'll want to see. florence is fucking awesome and completely walkable. four days here wouldn't be crazy at all.

siena is an nice little city for a night or (maybe) two, and a good base to explore tuscany. some of the hill towns (i spent time in montepulciano and montalcino) are really nice too if you want to take it easy for a bit. if you're a winemo, this can be a lot of fun.

skip venice, especially in the summer. it's really sad, but the city just isn't what it used to be. it's about as authentic as the casino in vegas, and hordes of obnoxious chinese tourists have completely taken over.

3 full days in rome is probably enough. definitely do a day at the vatican, definitely see all the roman stuff. i stayed in monti and liked that neighborhood.

it might sound nerdy as fuck, but i found rick steves to invaluable when figuring out my trip.

I visited Rome, Florence, and Naples when I went. Rome had the great historical sites, but it was a bit odd having it all in the middle of a bustling modern city. Naples seemed more like a pass-through to other local sites (Pompeii, Pisa, etc). I knew nothing about Florence going in and was absolutely blown away at how much I loved it. The old part of the city is all beautifully preserved and it was so nice just to walk around and people watch. Didn't have time for the museums but would if I could go back. Def budget a lot of time for Florence and Tuscany. Good luck!

Rsf seems to travel light and have no problem packing and unpacking and checking into new hotels but I don't think that's a great vacation approach.

So, for example, I'd stay 4 nights in Ravello with a day trip to Capri. No point in staying there for 2 nights and it's shit crowded in August. Same with herculaneum. I got there easily on a commuter train from Amalfi (somewhere, sorrento?) in a day and back with plenty of time for pool.

I would not go to Pompeii l and herculaneum both. Better to spend the extra day in Rome.

The CR for Capri is to rent a house in Anacapri with friends, lunch at Fontellina, go out on boats and have nice dinners and cocktails in town, then have people back around the pool at your house at night.

It might doesn't make sense for a day trip and still might not make sense for two days. My thinking is, if he had two days and took a hotel in town (or something like the Caesar Augustus w DEM VIEWS in Anacapri) they could spend one of the afternoons on a boat going around the island, swimming, blue grotto, etc.. and the other afternoon at Fontellina having a leisurely lunch and getting sun. The town is only choked with NOWAGs during the day, it chills out at night. Two nice dinners and spend one of the nights at Taverna Anema e Core.

*I do pack light (carry on only) though and it takes me 10-15 minutes to have everything packed and ready to go usually.
