Stupid. Predictably there's more people who got bogeys and doubles than pars. What's the point of calling a par 5 a par 4.

I think the average pro has a 285ish yard drive. And they aren't hitting them dead straight on average. So that's like a 240 yard fairway wood to be on green in regulation. Stupid.

i always thought there was some yardage limit for Par 4s and that once you went past it you had to make the hole a Par 5. Is that not true? (Or is it higher than 520 yards?)

no, it's not true. par just means pefect play assuming two putts per hole.

I think there was a US Open or some other tournament that had a 280 yard par 3 or something like that. That's what's really stupid.

These fairways are firm and the tee shot is likely down hill. They carry 285 + roll they're easily over 300.

Holding the greens/missing fairways is the big issue at Shinnecock

basically you have a huge increase from 2000-2003 due to the Pro-V1 and then smaller increases due to driver technology which then plateaued in 2005.

that's their avgs. with a downhill slope their 2nd shot is within 200 yds, which isn't too much of an ask for a so called challenging event of the world's best

Given that almost as many pros were double bogeying the hole as getting a par on it, I think it's safe to say the average pro did not have a sub 200 second shot to green

or "almost as many" doubles as pars.

and it looks like it's 536 yds, not 520 per op. so, yeah, 2nd shot within 200 is probably a stretch for most

i think it's 180.

the US Open is supposed to be the toughest challenge of the PGA Tour.

this is no waste management open.

at least 100 pga pros average roughly 300 off the tee, and no doubt, as said above, this particular par 4 is downhill with firm fairways. they're not going to make it impossible to hit the green in 2 strokes, but they are going to punish you for poor shots.

I have no problem with a couple par 4s being extra long. The entire field has to deal with it.

This is no different than an average player having to play a 420-440 yard par four. It's hard. People struggle because it requires two long and straight shots.

I like seeing pro's challenged and struggling sometimes. Makes it more relatable.

CR. I want to see pros struggling like I do. That's what the majors should be about. The biggest challenges. No one wants to see them breeze to pars and birdies every hole, never having to deal with any trouble.
