spiettth: masters + uso + british
rory: uso + british + 2 pga
assuming all else is equal (equal prize money, other titles, etc) over your career, which set of majors would you rather have?
would you trade 2 pga's for a green jacket? i think i would. i dont think 3 vs. 4 majors changes your place in history. is els necessarily better than vijay simply bc els won 4 majors and vijay won 3?
i think it's a fairly easy decision to take the green jacket and give up the pga's.

honestly, yes, i would make that trade.
Rory will always be asked about the Masters. Spieth will NEVER be asked about the PGA. And the perks at the Masters are 2nd to none.
golf majors are random enough that there is not necessarily a high likelihood of winning a green jacket in the future. it's not like tennis where the Big 3 got to major finals often enough that there was a good chance the missing major would eventually fall their way.

PGA might as well be the player's
USO and Masters are the real ones
British Open is a nice one to have for the history

yes i agree with that.
i was specifically asking in the context of having only the two of one major, but agreed that i wouldn't trade 2 British for a Masters.
I *might* trade 2 USO for a Masters in the situation where my career stalled out, assuming same career prize money to that point. My rationale being that I could play the Masters every year and making some cuts would get me some nice extra cash. But probably not.

i'm not dinging him compared to like Becker. I'm dinging him compared to guys in the 10-14 range.
now, he compares favorably to those players because of the career grand slam. but if we assume no career grand slam he absolutely has too many majors at the weakest event.
with no RG, you want a resume more like Pete -- dominating W/USO, with an AO or 2 just to have them.
you think pete gives a fuck about his second AO? you think he wouldn't trade it in a second for ANY of the other three majors?
you think agassi wouldn't trade 2 AOs for an extra RG and Wimby or for 2 more USO?

is the latter group more highly regarded than the former group?
lots of old names, but among recent names...
4: floyd, els, rory
3: spiettth, vijay, irwin, payne stewart, larry nelson, harrington, price
is the 4's group really greater on the goat scale than the 3's group? it's a smaller group, but is it a better group? i'm not so sure.
by comparison, here are the 5's: phil, seve
and the 6's: faldo and trevino
no 7's in a long time
8's are player and watson

on this note, trevino won 6 majors -- never won a masters and 2 each at the other 3.
u think he'd trade two PGA's for a green jacket? fuck yes.
would he trade two PGA's and ONE of his US or british titles for a green jacket? probably not

Here's a hypo -- would Watson trade 1 British OR 1 Masters for a PGA?
Intuitively I say no.

it was always less than the US open but otherwise it wasnt always less desirable.
shit changes. top players skipped the british all the time, even a few in the past couple decades.
the complete reverence for the masters by players is pretty new. before the billy payne era augusta got criticized all the time. look back to when they changed the greens to bent and doods were brutal that year. jack nicklaus still says the masters is actually lesser than the other majors because of the small field and says its not a true "championship"

does it?
i think trevino is forgotten, in part because he doesn't have a masters. in fact, his best finish there is T10 twice. ouch.
trevino with 4 majors incl on each at masters, us, british probably has as much or even MORE cred than trevino today, no?

while i begrudgingly agree that W is the most prestigious, again it's the combination of a fast surface (W or USO) with RG that is very prestigious.
and USO is without a doubt more prestigious than the AO, and that's doubly true for an American.
so yes the W alone makes it better, but W with RG is the ideal combo. i can't believe you'd disagree with that.

Masha is overshadowed by Serena.
Hingis was the best player of her 5 year era and probably should have won more majors than she did. she also retired in 2003 at age 22. she is better than Masha.
she also has 209 weeks at #1 compared to 21 weeks for Masha
Masha is probably more famous to lay people though
but Hingis would 100000000% trade one of her AO for an RG. i also think a huge knock on Hingis that she has a paltry 2 majors away from Australia. that's pretty bad. but her early retirement undoubtedly cost her a few majors

the "probably should have won more majors than she did" is a slippery slope. should we rate andre and phil higher on the ATG list for the same reason?
>>but Hingis would 100000000% trade one of her AO for an RG
ONE of them, and no more. only bc RG only exists to complete the boxed set

i just meant that she was a more talented player than her number of majors suggests.
i feel that way about other players too: evert, connors, agassi, borg, seles, lendl to name a few.
Hingis had the game and has the secondary statistics of a player who won more like 7-10 majors.
|
Date: June 20th, 2018 9:18 PM Author: Impressive Range
but isn't that sport, no?
agassi and lendl were chokers to an extent. borg quit in his prime. hingis had a short career bc she burnt out. seles was stabbed and was never the same afterwards.
evert and connors? a somewhat different category. probably won less than they should due to being in tough eras.

it is, but you can't just look at one data point.
Hingis has a lot of other stats that are better than Masha, and that's with her retiring from singles at age 22 as well.
so she's kind of a bad example for the relative prestige of the AO
but even at that, i kind of cringe at the fact that given how good her career was from 16-22 that she has only 2 majors outside of Australia. that's historically bad for a player of her caliber.
----------------------------------------
connors and evert are underrated because they were basically playing 3 majors a year for their whole career -- and only 2 a year because of WTT in some peak years.

Can we revisit the point in this thread regarding the list of players who won 4, 5, and 6 majors?
Here is the list (omitting the really ancient players):
6: Trevino, Faldo
5: Mickelson, Seve, Byron Nelson, Peter Thomson
4: Els, Floyd, McIlroy, Bobby Locke
--------------------------------------------------
Is there really a gigantic difference among this group? I'm not seeing it.

stewart had a bit of a choker rep and "could" have won more, plus he died the year he won a major.
paddy, yes, he's a weak one. peaked at the exact right time in a transitional era.
nelson i dunno enough about

we've talked about how there's more of a tournament hierarchy in tennis as opposed to golf, so i think tournaments won is a better indicator of golf prowess, whereas majors won is better in tennis (at least at the top).
so when comparing these guys, you can kinda rank them by tournaments won and then adjust based on majors.
for payne, 11 wins with 3 of them being majors strikes me as pretty fair. not sure he should have won 5 or 6 majors.
Phil at 43 wins and 5 majors clearly has left some majors on the course. i really view him as an 8 major type player

idk if there's literally no difference, but there is far less of a difference
also, winning ANY PGA tournament is much more important than winning a tennis tournament. period. i think any win on the PGA tour nets you at least $1M and it also gets you a 2 year exemption on tour. that is HUGE.
i actually wish tennis would do something similar. the PGA tour is much much better run than the ATP tour

prize money should just be higher such that the top 100 can make a good living, and top 200 can make a living.
the ranking system is basically a card system. if you're top 100, you're getting into main draws at plenty of 250's.
ljl @ health benefits. sounds like some shitlib sjw initiative. seems too complicated to administer. u have to buy tiafoe health insurance in sierra leone? do they even have it?
