People talk about the extortion angle from the perspective of Trump wanting his wall and that Trump is using this as a way to bludgeon, ok, but that's just one aspect of this.
The other aspect of this is that he's basically telling McConnell to let him have a floor vote on Sessions' hypothetical replacement AG (which he's been denying thus far) or else he can't be responsible for what Sessions does.
