most people don't do either so for 95% of people, the answer is no.

This - I have over 7 years sober and have no hesitation saying AA saved my life. There are many miraculous turnarounds through AA, but there are also many times more tragic stories of people who die, waste their life etc. that don't confront their problem in time.
