"1) Family units can go home quickly. The option that both honors our laws and keeps family units together is a swift return home after prosecution. But immigrant advocates hate it because they want the migrants to stay in the United States. How you view this question will depend a lot on how you view the motivation of the migrants (and how seriously you take our laws and our border)."

Trump continues morally questionable Obama era policy concerning the processing of illegal immigrant families that involve the separation of parents from their children for the purpose of legal processing. There apparently is some case law that forbids keeping the kids with the parents when the parents are detained. Trump continues this practice.
Democrats, who are concerned with Trump's recent successes, have been holding this card for a while (i.e. this practice openly has been going on for a while, but with some work, it can be used to make Trump look heartless). Libs & Democrats saw how effective the use of children can be with that one dead Syrian kid. Either way, after the North Korea meeting, and with Trump's popularity headed North fast, the lib powers that be decided to roll this thing out at this time. The media that is dedicated to helping Democrats (which is most of them) are doing their jobs by drumming up outrage. Women & low T men are behaving predictably.
It's a particularly tough issue for Trump because it unites Democrats and establishment Republicans. There is nothing that would make GOP guys like Lindsay Graham, Marco Rubio, and the whole Bush clan happier than letting every one of these kids in and putting them right in your school district (not theirs of course).
Trump has won these battles before, so it will be interesting to see how this goes.

I like that he his using it to his advantage to try to get something done. Despite the manufactured outrage that has been carefully planned to hurt his presidency, he is actively working to make this a positive for him.
I can't imagine in my lifetime ever seeing a man better suited for the job of POTUS than Trump - just look at how Bush II took a shit when the media went after him for Katrina. Katrina is kid stuff compared to what the media throws at Trump, yet Trump wins and he wins.
Disclaimer: this kerfuffle isn't over it, it will be interesting to see if Trump can weather and gain advantage here.
