wife on a work trip in LA this week, and i'm going to fly out to meet her saturday night. we'll likely rent a car and drive up the coast for a couple days, then will fly back to NY from either san jose or SF on wednesday late.

thinking maybe santa barbara, maybe kill a night in solvang. would like to drive big sur, though need to research road closings i guess.

any must-dos? anyone do a similar trip recently?

head up to San Luis Obispo, Cambria, then you can go inland and around up to Big Sur and Monterey

any must-dos for the trip?

i honestly haven't spent a second thinking about california in years. have absolutely no clue what to do except i figure the drive up the coast must be nice and there's probably a couple nice wineries/vineyards along the way.

it is nice

would be best if you could go up the 1 all the way but it won't be reopened til the end of July iirc

still the trip is worth it especially once you get up to Big Sur (you may have to go down from where you go back to the coast from inland I forget)

Carmel is super touristy but pretty and on the way up to Monterey

Hearst Castle is kitschy, but if you’re driving past SLO might as well check it out. Also, pretty amusing how they bend a lot of his history to make it come out favorable for him.

Monterey Bay Acquarium is actually pretty 180 even without kids. Can recommend a non-touristy seafood place or good pizza joint there if you need.

In SF maybe bike around town / the bridge if you want like a physical activity. Consider staying at Cavallo Point (across the bridge near Sausalito) + spa services there, your wife will love it; opt for the old navy officer quarters, not the new rooms. In the city, MOMA is worth checking out.

If you stay in Solvang, the ostrich farm is worth 15-20 minutes. You get to feed aggressive ostriches: https://www.ostrichlandusa.com/

ha, yeah. we actually joked about that.

think i'm leaning away from actually staying in solvang (seems painfully touristy), but might drive through on the way up.

It's touristy in a AAA bus trip way, but it is right off 101. Industrial Eats (restaurant) and Ostrichland are right off the same exit.

Winery recs in the places you've mentioned:

Santa Barbara (the city): Au Bon Climat - tasting room, open all the time

Santa Rita Hills (between Buellton / Solvang and Lompoc): Clos Pepe (you have to email the dude); Pence Ranch

Los Olivos: Tercero, which is awesome and Larry is a character; Dragonette is okay and right next door

Paso Robles: L'Aventure and Tablas Creek are both great and worth the effort to go; Daou ("Dow") has okay wine that's widely available but the views are sick

Other stuff:

Agreed with Wheeling that Hearst Castle is cool; the elephant seals are a couple of miles farther north and they're worth seeing

In Big Sur, Nepenthe for a meal while it's light out; Glen Oaks is a chill place to stay that's less expensive than Ventana and somewhat romantic if that does it for you

Buellton / Solvang: Ostrichland and Industrial Eats are <5 mins from each other if you need a lunch stop around there

Check out Montana de oro. Only 15 minutes or so away from slo. It’s a small state park with one road through it that runs along the coast. When u get to the end of the road u just turn around in the parking area.

Lots of walks and hikes of various levels.

It can be foggy this time of year but if it’s clear it’s very pretty.

I grew up in the small town u drive through on the way to Montana de oro so I’m very familiar with the area. Shoot if u have any questions.

Otherwise check out big sur, Hearst castle, San Simeon etc.
