workday is around 8am - 7/8; with an hour or so at night to finish up emails, etc.. once a week work til like 9/10; a couple hours ever Saturday to play catch-up. I’m basically white knuckled to the keyboard all day too nonstop. Oh and I get 50k less than biglaw.

At least the window opens all the way and I’m on the 20th floor...

i was at two midlaw firms - one regional full-service firm with ~200 attorneys, and then a national L&E firm. workload at both was about the same as in biglaw but for much less money, and somewhat better prospects for obtaining dat breakfast.

>> workload at both was about the same as in biglaw but for much less money, and somewhat better prospects for obtaining dat breakfast. <<

but isn't that why most people are in biglaw past, say, 4th or 5th year?

the benefit to biglaw and midlaw is partnership and being able to build a book and realize more of your billings.

a partner i worked for when i first started told me that the true benefit to biglaw was the partnership prospects and not the associate salaries. his feeling was that, past a certain point, the work and the clients are just way too demanding for it to make sense to keep working in biglaw for $400k as an of counsel or whatever, and that if you didn't see yourself getting to the point where you made $1M+ then you should look for a better job.

i think that's pretty accurate.

It's not just a slightly better chance at breakfast. 75% of the midlaw bros in my class year are partner, and have been for a couple of years.

But "partner" doesn't mean the same thing in midlaw. I have cases against a couple of 32 yo midlaw partners who are still doing the discovery work.

i agree. there'd be no reason to be in midlaw unless partnership prospects were higher, and i'd MUCH rather be a partner in midlaw than a senior assoc/of counsel in biglaw, for a whole host of reasons.

Firms that pay partners $200K in expensive cities like NYC & DC aren't midlaw, that's shitlaw. Midlaw pays more than that in my bombed-out flyover ghost town.

i mean, shit, i have a friend who is at a transactional boutique in the NYC metro where new partners are making about $400k and the avg partner takes home $1M, and that's way smaller than midlaw even.

yeah, if you are in it for the long haul midlaw might be the way to go.

having said that, i left the L&E firm just as i was about to make partner - that firm caps nonequity parter salary at $250k (nationwide, so you can live in DC/NY/SF and that is your cap, just like the insurance defense partner in nebraska). i left for a middling v100 firm and was making about that as a senior associate. firm also makes it near-impossible to make equity - you basically have to be a rainmaker, in which case you might as well go to a better firm and make more money.

i also made partner at the biglaw firm right after the 2-year waiting period expired, for what it's worth.

the national L&E firms aren't true midlaw. The model is completely different. In a way they're more like traditional corporations than anything.

well let me say this about the regional midlaw firm i was at - i wasn't there long enough to even be thinking about making partner, but i know plenty of people who stayed there. first year partners make under $200k, and there are a bunch of equity partners making like $220k.

the comp is very similar at both of these shithouse firms.

I'm thinking about leaving a low six-figure government job for midlaw of counsel/partner. I work pretty hard as government jobs go, but I'd have to hustle my ass off to build a book of business at the firm. Once I do that, the money should be 2 or 3 times greater. Worth it?

yes, but only nominally. i'm a partner (with some equity component to my comp) at a v100 firm in DC. i am 100% a service partner bitch nigger. i have no illusions about that. although i am a partner, at the end of the day i'm just an employee dependent on someone else.

the chances that you rise beyond that are negligible.

and don't fool yourself - that wider array of work will just be mind-numbing drudgery with moments of interesting/intellectually challenging assignments.

plus a good number of your coworkers, particularly the partners, and particularly partners who control business and are therefore untouchable, will be mentally ill assholes. i know there are a lot of weirdos in govt (did both my law school summer jobs with the feds), but law firm partners are a whole different animal.

They measure their self worth by their work. Every deal/case is personal. It’s not just a job to them - it’s their hobby, their wife, their brother, their outlet, their everything. They thinki nothing of missing daily family events because the “file always comes first”.. of course they take the occasional early day to watch some dance recital or graduation but those are few and far between and are mostly just so they can say they care about their kids (they don’t); and overall they have no contact to any typical day - they seek out deal trophies, not family photos.

For example, I once told my partner that I couldn’t sit in on call because I had to leave by certain time that one day. He was ok but casually referred to it as “leaving early”.... it was 6pm.

Now, given all that, imagine what it’s like to be an associate who just wants to leave at five everyday.
