I wasn't a big fan of Master and Commander, but since my friend strongly insisted the second book was better (he even suggested starting there) I decided I'd give it a shot before quitting the series.
Definitely much better than the first book. Way more humor and character than the first book, and a better plot. Ironically, for a nautical series, I think it benefited a great deal from spending more time on land; the shore sequences were generally very good and the naval sequences were more exciting because he spent way less time repeating impenetrable naval jargon.
That said, the book still felt a tad long; in particular the last 100 pages were a drag. Still, I liked it enough that I'll read the third book, and probably keep going until I lose interest.
I also finished The Thanatos Syndrome by Walker Percy last week but didn't make a thread on it. It wasn't very good, to be honest. It all seemed like a very convoluted way to make an argument against abortion by comparing it to the Holocaust. Pretty cheesy and weak.

I adore Moby Dick, tho
nine years later, my bookmark is still in there: apparently I gave up about 2/3rds of the way through M&C
I was actually planning on heading to DC this weekend but something came up; I might still be doing it but it'll be at the last second. I'll make a summon post if so. If not, I'll probably be up there in a few weeks because a friend is there for the summer and has room.
