An ideal setup would be one in which employees are assigned a weekly list of discrete tasks to accomplish, upon completion of which the employee would not be expected in the office. Of course, this would only work in certain non-customer facing roles and would require quality control to ensure that the employee wasn’t cutting corners in order to complete tasks more quickly.

First, there are plenty of jobs IN WHICH tasks could be assigned weekly. I’ve worked in jobs where tasks are assigned less than once per week. Second, the start of each employee in a workgroup’s work week could be staggered. In other words, assignments coming in on Wednesday could be given to staffers whose weekly list of tasks are given on Thursday or Friday. Third, change “weekly” to “twice weekly” or “daily” and employees are still incentivized to be productive and efficient.

most other jobs are the opposite - 40+ hour minimum facetime requirement but too few or too mundane tasks to give your work a sense of urgency or purpose

like shithead pumo says, jobs that fall in the middle of these two poles are extremely rare. if you want something in the middle, you're going to have to create it for yourself using a system that works for you (e.g., Total Workday Control)
