In the many years of my life before undocumented immigrants became such a huge cause celebre, it was my impression that the reason politicians of both parties decried undocumented immigration while doing nothing concrete to hinder it was primarily because the big business interests that financed political campaigns wanted the undocumented workers here to depress wages. My fellow liberals can perhaps console themselves with the reflection that despite the current seemingly enthusiastic display of anti-immigrant viciousness by the Trump administration, undocumented immigrants will, perhaps after a brief lull as the Republicans cynically feed their nonsense to Trump's base until they are thoroughly satiated, be with us for all the wrong reasons until big business's stranglehold on our politicians is broken. |
