Dude absolutely not. A $600 bike from a bike shop is going to be in a completely different league than a Wal Mart bike. I was a bike mechanic in college, and while a $600 bike is nothing special, at least it can be set up to work properly. Wal Mart shitbikes are quite literally impossible to tune properly, usually due to some shit like the derailleur hanger being bent from the factory or by the $10/hr installer. At first I’d try fixing Huffys and Nexts and Mongooses, but quickly finally learned to just turn people away when they brought their shitbikes in for repair.

Don’t upgrade component by component, that’ll cost a fortune. For road bikes, past around the $1,200 or $1,500 mark you’re just buying a lighter bike, and believe me it’s not at all worth the money for a beginner - or just about any non-pro - to spend money on an ultralightweight bike. The only place weight makes a noticeable difference is wheels and tires, and even there it’s completely unnecessary. A bike with a Shimano 105 level component group offers exactly the same functionality as one with Shimano Dura Ace, only the 105 stuff is heavier and multiples cheaper than the Dura Ace.

i'd recommend starting with a cheap used bike, then figuring out what you like and want.

you might decide that you want to go fast on paved roads, or maybe you decide that you want to ride mountain trails, or do cyclocross. it's hard to know before you start.

Figure out what frame size fits you then buy a used bike off of Craigslist. You can get sweet ass vintage steel bikes with Dura Ace grade components under $500 in my area. Ride it as long as you want, and if it doesn't work out, sell it for what you paid.

Extremely CR. I bought this handmade lugged steel Paramount with the beyond Dura Ace quality Mavic 870 group for $250 a couple years ago.

Awesome find! Now, I wouldn't give this same advice for mountain bikes, unless it's a garage queen that was never really used (decent # of those). But for road bikes like the one you found, they're almost "free" in the sense that once you're bored with it, you can snap a few photos and have it resold in a weeks time for ~ what you paid.

I agree. Old mountain bikes are in no way comparable to road bikes because suspension tech, travel, and frame geometry has changed enormously over the past 25 years. The only things that have really changed the user experience on road bikes is brake lever shifters.

I could sell the derailleurs on this thing today on Ebay for the same price I paid for the whole bike. It was a steal.

Not an expert but I'd probably:

- Obviously eyeball it. Pull the seat tube out and look inside for rust, etc. Check out the gears for broken or bent cogs, that kind of stuff.

- Spin the wheels to see if they catch on the brakes to determine if they're true. Even if they aren't probably an easy fix with a spoke wrench.

- Take it for a ride and run up and down the gears, try shifting several gears at once and seeing if you can make it jump off gears. Even if that happens, also likely an easy fix with a new chain (if it's slack) or adjusting the cable.

The good thing is that a bike shop can replace / adjust cables and all that for not a lot of $.

Get to know the component hierarchy. You can judge a bike pretty quickly based on its component group, and the easiest component to look at is the rear derailleur. The Shimano heirarchy, from worst to best, goes something like

Claris

Sora/RSX (vintage)

Tiagra/RX-100 (vintage)

105

Ultegra/600 (vintage)

Dura Ace

For a bike from the the 80s or 90s, stick with Shimano 600 level or above. 105 or above for a bike from the 2000s.

There's one major difference between a vintage (1980s/ early 90s) bike with lugged steel frame and 600 components and a brand new carbon frame with Ultegra components, and that's the location of the shifters. Newer bikes have the shifters integrated into the brake levers and older bikes have shifters attached to the downtube (frame). Having the shifters at your fingertips is convenient, but it's far from essential on a road bike.

As far as I'm concerned, the only thing different between a top end vintage and a new road bike is their looks, and I think lugged steel frames are about as pretty as it gets. Check out these lugged steel works of art:

Here are some titanium lugged carbon fiber frames. They're great looking, but I'd stay away from the vintage stuff:
