Just hours after deciding to learn, I picked up a 140 amp MIG welder from Home Depot. I quickly learned that I'd need a lot more than just a welder to make stuff, so I basically cut all entertainment expenses and spent that money on tools instead.
I moved into a new place a year or so later and didn't have any furniture, so I decided to build whatever I could. All metal furniture wasn't going to fly, so I decided to learn a little woodworking. Started just incorporating pre-made butcher block into things, eventually started making my own butcher block, and now I've got the tools and skills to make live edge tables and stuff. |

As for welding, there are several great books on the subject. If you read them, truly internalize the content, and practice your technique (which is relatively simple), you will be a top notch welder.
As for woodworking, I would recommend you give serious thought trying the old school hand tools only approach. It is much more satisfying to build classic pieces in this manner, which both look good and are not readily available. Buy Roy Underhill's books and watch The Woodright's Shop. |

I learned just about everything on YouTube, weldingtipsandtricks.com, and woodworking forums. It’s not rocket science and I was able to build top notch stuff from the start, I just spent a long time making sure to do it right. The only real difference between then and now is that I don’t have to look up how to do stuff and get things done much faster.
Learning how to use Sketchup has also been extremely worthwhile. I build a sketchup model of every project, then create a diagram showing every piece that needs to be cut. I’m able to complete projects literally 3 times faster than when I started and would design and build the project simultaneously. |
