The notion of a typical narrative having a beginning, middle and end always seemed incoherent to me. Life does not have a "middle", it is a strict binary force: you are born and you die, you are young and you are old, you are skinny or fat, you fall in love and then out of love, etc
This is apparent when considering famous trilogies: Star Wars would benefit from Return of the Jedi never having existed. The Godfather 3 was superfluous. Back to the Future 2 was a lazy riff on the first while the 3rd was unique and innovative. The two Matrix sequels were just tedious info dumps. Even LotR suffers from the trilogy format unless you count it as a quartet with the Hobbit.
