First, not every open office is the same. Some are doing the hotelling model (nothing allowed on the desk, nowhere to put a picture).

Our open office model gives us assigned 6'x3' desks in 6x2 blocks with 12" separators on the sides and a 24" tackboard divider on the back of the desk. My desk is a cluttered mess of loose leaf tea, business cards, paper notes, my briefcase, mugs and cups, etc. I hang my lunchbox from the arm of my chair because there's no other convenient place for it. I've been meaning to bring a picture of my family in.

We also have lockers (maybe 2'x2'x2'), but I use mine for storing extra cutlery for when I host department breakfasts every couple weeks. Some stick their purses in there or their briefcases. I find it rather inconvenient to store anything that gets used in there. There's a coatrack at the end of the row of desks for rainy days like today.

The ambiance is nice enough. I sit 15 feet from a window, so there's plenty of natural light. The ceiling is high and the walls are bright, so it doesn't feel claustrophobic despite there being 5 people nearly within arm's reach. They pump in white noise so that conversations don't carry as much and so that the clicks and taps of keyboards don't drive everybody nuts. Most people put headphones on all day.

Most of us take non-confidential calls at our desks, and it's really not a bother. There are some folks who are a bit loud, but the ambient noise dampens that issue. Sometimes, if there are groups of people having conversations, the ambient noise is too loud to hear one's phone call properly, but some of that may be that my hearing isn't the best.

When they did this in our office they also added like 8 mini conference rooms that hold 4 people uncomfortably. I basically try to find any reason to bogart one of those for as much of the day as possible now. Also helps that 70% of the office went to 2 or 3 days a week remote. Sadly my main senior exec client and all his directs come in every day and expect everyone they work with to do the same.

Others sneak it depending on the tolerance of their managers. This has increased dramatically since the open office plan.

I still come in 1-2x a week just to meet with people in person.

Requires? few things "require" an in-person meeting. But some things are better done in person anyway, possibly because some people prefer it. Or sometimes that's the most efficient way of getting things done (you get everyone in a room and work on what you need to work on until you get done).

I realize I'm lucky to be allowed to WFH most of the time, so I try not to abuse it and be the reason it isn't allowed. So if there's a real desire to meet in person, I show up. I try to stack in person meetings during 1-2 afternoons. This allows everone to be happy. I get to WFH most of the time, and people that want to meet with me in person can still do that.

a) A lot of these people are senior exec boomers/late gen Xers, and it is really their call;

b) Because some people work better when they can see facial expressions and there's a lot of politics involved in this shit, so getting in a room and just getting a decision by the end is often the fastest way to get to a resolution.

Also, a piece of advice: if you're the asshole that fights all of this, you're just who gets axed in the inevitable next round of layoffs or who gets forced to come into the office every single day and gets micromanaged. If you're the boss in charge then sure, you can do what you want. Otherwise, you'll follow orders or get sent packing.

Open offices are partly a necessary evil due to economic regression over the last few decades. There's a mutual lack of trust between upper management and lower-level managers, and no company loyalty. Open offices serve a dual function as a risk reduction method and managerial control method since everyone can watch and police everyone else. Of course, everyone also takes a mental health hit.

Open offices are fine in areas where footage isn't insanely expensive and people get a good amount of space. It's weird to go your flyover office park and get stuffed in a cube.

It’s not really a fad. Open plan offices are common in shithole countries where there’s a similarly shitty employee <-> employer relationship. Most likely they’re here to stay until corporate culture changes.

it's completely a fad in this country. somehow all of GC managed to completely remodel their office spaces at the exact same time and in the exact same way. it's weird as fuck.

renovating entire offices isn't cheap or easy to do so you're right that they're not going to go back to normal cubes any time soon. open offices at least now are new and trendy looking and have high tech shit. it will be even more depressing once it starts to look dated and the high tech stuff starts to break.

Like two years ago my company switched to open office style with the small desk space, low walls, no assigned seating, lockers, coat rooms, tiny conference "huddle" rooms, high tech shit everywhere, etc. When I first saw the office it blew my mind how fucktardedly mindblowingly stupid the new setup was. It's even more mindblowingly stupid when you realize that nearly all of corporate america is doing the same thing, spending billion$ in the process.

1. despite having tiny ass desks and no privacy, it doesn't seem to actually save any space. the desks are in 2x2 cross shaped blocks with a good amount of space between each block. Just eyeballing it you could tell that normal 2x2 cubicle blocks would easily fit in the space that the 2x2 shitdesks take up.

2. they were sold on the open office idea initially because they were consolidating 2 office buildings into a single one. between the desks not actually saving space and all the extra conference rooms and other crap, you're barely even increasing seating capacity. This doesn't even fucking matter because the new office setup is so retarded that everyone who could come up with any excuse to WFH did so. I walked around the floor last time I was there and it was maybe 50% occupied.

3. making the office overly trendy looking and investing in tons of high tech shit just accelerates how quickly it will look like shit, start breaking, how costly it will be to be replace stuff. like for years everyone just used simple projectors and pull down screens for meetings and it worked fine. If the projector broke you ordered a new one for like $200. The now replaced all of those with giant ass wall mounted monitors that you need to install an app to connect to and probably cost like $15K. They look super cool now but that shit will be a nightmare to replace and maintain.

I'll think of more stuff later. this barely scratches the surface.

4. The idea of unassigned seating is so far detached from even a basic understanding of human behavior that it has to have been thought up by an XO poaster. Obviously everyone who still goes in the office has "their" seat that they sit in every day and if some random faggot shows up and sits there they would tell them to gtfo. I get that there are ppl who barely come in and giving them an assigned office is a waste (I've seen particularly stupid examples of this over the years) but there are ways to avoid that without taking the ape approach and getting rid of assigned space for everybody.

5. it's disgusting. everyone is supposed to ride a dirty piss soaked subway with ppl coughing all over you just to get to an office with no separation to keep ppl from coughing all over you there and everyone hangs their influenza drenched coats in a communal coat closet. There are going to be examples if it hasn't happened already where entire departments get the flu and someone will eventually die from this.

6. the idea of "improved productivity" really means we want to make sure you don't fuck around on the internet all day. never mind that they waited until every single person carried a personal computer that fits in their pocket and can connect to the internet independent of the company's network to start giving a shit about this. that and also having half the company working at home in their underwear and the other half in a Chinese factory environment is really great for building a healthy company culture.

enough already do that basically every meeting is a conference call. everyone being in the office is actually more productive, especially for meetings. I'm a WFHmo and cherish it but I'll even admit that. anyone who says otherwise isn't being honest.

it's department and manager specific so it varies. some ppl have to and others i guess want to.

he's not wrong though. having a 50/50 home/office split does hurt productivity depending on what type of work being done. too many ppl work from home now and view it as a perk, so it would be tough to take that away and going 100% virtual also would have it's own challenges.

spending millions on switching to open offices just because cool people in California do it makes no sense though and will just accelerate the move to 100% remote.

I think building WFH into the model to further reduce costs is definitely part of the equation. I know with our office they assume that a certain number of people will be in at any given time (nowhere near 100%) and if everyone actually showed up we would run out of space.

Yea but they went full retard and refused to assign space even to people who come in every day. And in practice they aren’t even close to running out of space because so many ppl wfh. There’s no need to cram desks together

With us, they crammed more people in the same space, so even with WFH the place is often packed. The WFH is built into their expectations. Of course, the flaw in the plan is that people are out or WFH Monday and Friday but Tu, We and Th there's a space crunch.

Supposedly, the lack of assigned spaces ensures "more efficient usage" of desks. The concept makes sense, but of course it just drives people not to come in.

I've seen lulzy examples of poor space management over the years that probably led to that mindset. even still, the ppl who come in every day are going to sit in the same spot regardless so you may as well just assign it to them.

I worked on a floor with a lot of executive offices once. There was a CEO office that no one actually used. We would use it for meetings but were told that wasn't allowed after a while. Last time I checked it was being used to store chairs. Another shitboomer female vp DEMANDED her own office space on the exec floor so they converted a large conference room to an office for her. In four years I never saw her once.

I worked at a place that was 100% cubicles except for the exec floor. That was actually pretty efficient because you could convert the VP and management cubes back to low level faggot cubes if you wanted to.

Agreed, and we've seen that. Some people (usually admin staff) have REBELLED against the rules and even leave personal items on their claimed little space. Of course, no one is lame enough to do anything about it.

I'm actually a fan of near 100% remote. People just have to be flexible enough to meet in person if senior leaders decide that it makes sense.

As to people fucking around - great employees are great employees, and slackers are slackers. Overall, I'm more productive at home than in the office. Days I actually have to come in end up getting made up for when I WFH.

all you need to do is take everyone out to lunch and/or get them drink on the company dime every so often and you'll end up with a team where everyone gets along. not hard.

agreed. though i will go one-step further.

i think you need two other things in addition to that

1. you need to hire people who fit the same mold. companies shouldn't be like frats obviously, but they should be a little fratty in a way by hiring people that all clearly mesh well together. also i personally think the higher the male % the better.

2. companies need to know when to yield to employees. i've had to cancel trips and things in the past for work, but it makes a HUGE difference if i can say to someone, "this is non-negotiable and very important to me" and they actually respect it. and they should also respect the holidays. if you give people a break when it's really important to them, that will come back in spades.

Open office offers nice lighting and views out of windows, but it makes it impossible to get any non routine work done without delays.

Conference room squatting is ever present, and companies presumably lose a significant number of deals due to people being unable to find an open conference room in time for a call.

I'm jealous of the WFH bros who call into conference calls with their puppydood ruffing in the background.

You all niggers know where I work at this point. Our bank is basically tearing down their biggest tower in Manhattan and rebuilding it for this shit and in the meantime we are warehousing the 15,000 people who worked there in our lower Manhattan, Brooklyn and Jersey City offices half of which have already been converted to this setup. I have spoken to the GC of the whole bank about exactly this. They save mad bank by going open office and encouraging half the people to work from home everyday. They save so much bank that theyve rented out entire floors to other companies now. TTT Alstate is in our Brooklyn campus and TTT Citibank got a floor in one of our Jersey City towers. They save tens of millions doing this shit and then make millions more in rent.
