Fellas, we are just over a week away from the 105th edition of the TOUR DE FRANCE.

The first week looks like an utter snooze fest, with the highlights being the team time trial in Stage 3 and some rollers on Stage 5 that set up for Sagan or someone in the breakaway to take the stage.

The last 2 weeks will have some pretty epic stages:

Stage 9: Cobbles

Stage 10: Brutal mountain stage with three Category 1 climbs and one HC climb

Stage 11: short stage with a summit finish, so the GC contenders will be attacking from the very start

Stage 12: Two HC climbs and a summit finish at ALPE D'HUEZ. Everyone will be gunning for this one

Stage 17: Another super short stage with a summit finish. This will be interesting because for the first time ever they're employing a grid start based on overall standings. Froome won't have the whole sky train around to save him on this stage.

Stage 20: individual time trial.

Some crazy shit happened this weekend.

The French losers tried to pull some shady shit by banning Froome at the last minute--knowing that the French court system wouldn't do anything about it within the week.

This ultimately forced UCI and WADA's hand and they ended up clearing Froome of any doping charges.

Froome all the way. In all honesty, Sky are the best at cheating.

Froome looked pretty mediocre in the Giro, but put together probably the single greatest one day performance in modern cycling to win the Giro. He went solo from 80k and beat all of his rivals--that's just not done. I'm guessing that Froome held back in the first two weeks of the Giro because he knew he was going to attempt the double.

I wish it were easy to watch the Giro. If it had been on NBCsports I would've loved watching it.

I also love watching the women fall on their asses every year in the ladies tour de france. although i think they've done away with that now, unfortunately. it was very lulzy.

do you ride too, or just like to watch?

They still have la course (the womens event, but it's like a 2 or 3 stage race now).

You can stream the giro online, but it's a total pain in the ass. But the Vuelta de Espana is available on NBC's online package. For like $50 for the year you can stream the Tour, the Vuelta, the world championship (I think) and a bunch of the spring one day classics. The year for the new pass just started, so I'd consider getting it if you like watching this type of stuff.

Yeah, I love to ride. I usually have some sort race on the tv (the Red Bull TV App has the UCI MTB World Cup which is also really fun to watch) when I'm riding my bike on my indoor trainer (which is like 90% of the time when ride).

Are the other events as fun to watch? (I guess I mean are they produced as nicely/extensively?---a big part of the appeal for me is getting to look at interesting shit in France).

Also, what kind of bike do you ride?

A lot of the classics are in France, Belgium, northern Europe so I think they'll appeal to you in a similar way. And they're more a spectacle because they're going over the cobbles and super rough roads.

Spain is a beautiful country in its own right and has plenty of mountain stages too.

You can also watch the cyclocross events in the fall/winter, which are pretty cool.

I have:

Cervelo S5, I built it up custom, but spends almost all of its time exclusively on my trainer lol

Felt F1x, that is gravel race bike

Surly Crosscheck, its over 10 years old but is still rocking. I just use this for riding around town with the GF.

Would you recommend the Surly for someone who just rides around at a park? I'm looking for something that can fit a big enough tire to handle some gravel towpath rides too.

yeah, sure. If you're just riding recreationally, you just want a frame that can accommodate big tires. You'll also want to make sure whatever you get comes with tubeless tires

likely not much. I'm guessing the surly is probably disc brake now so not much of what you have will cross over. Also your old components won't be competitive with any new wheels.

I checked and it's not disc specific btw. However, you can get a brand new 105 group set for like $300 online. That's going to be so much better than what you have now.

I basically never get to ride, unfortunately. But when I do (like a couple times a month) I ride either an old trek sport touring model with 27 1 3/8 tires) or an old trek 660 (with 700c x 23 tires). Both are steel bikes from the mid to late 80's.

I mainly ride on a pretty flat paved path that's about 20 miles in length.

~*~BETTING ODDS~*~

Chris Froome - 7/4

Richie Porte - 19/4

Nairo Quintana - 9/1

Mikel Landa - 11/1

Vincenzo Nibali - 14/1

I'm not sure there is a lot of value in betting on Froome. If you think Froome won't be fresh coming off the Giro or will crash out at some point, I think Quintana or Landa are the best play--they're on the same team though, so you're gonna have to figure out which one is the leader.

ITV's Tour de France podcast is the best one for day-to-day scholarship, imo. It's a bit shambolic, but in an enjoyable way.

I listen to lance's podcast, but he's not very prepared at all and doesn't seem engaged at this point. Also his co-host is a retard.

http://inrng.com/ is a good source for daily previews/breakdowns. The guy that writes the blog is not the best writer, but the information is good. I'm almost tempted to email this bro and offer to help edit his shit for him, because he's really well informed from a cycling perspective. Also velonews is decent.

Interesting article for you bros. Talks about the aerodynamic effects in a peloton.

Riders in the back of the peloton can experience only 5% of the drag compared to an isolated rider. This means that if the peloton is going 33 mph, the riders at the very back essentially only have to work as hard as if they were riding by themselves at 7-10 mph, according to this study.

I think it might overstate the aero benefits a little bit, but riding in the peloton definitely sucks you along.

Not necessarily sprinters, but non-climbers. Thomas (about a minute ahead), who is also on Sky, would be a serious contender if he were on any other team, but he's riding for Froome still.

The rest of the contenders are all within a few seconds either way of Froome.

Sky might back Thomas if they feel like he has a better shot of winning. In 2012 Froome was arguably stronger than Wiggins (and even attacked him while Wiggins was in yellow, which is something you basically never do), but Sky still backed Wiggins because the tour was so heavy on time trials and Wiggins was the best time trialer in the world at the time.

I'd say Froome still has the slight edge at this point, with Thomas and Quintana slightly behind.

The guy currently in yellow was in the breakaway so he effectively had a 5 or 6 minute head start on the GC guys in the peloton, but only finished about two minutes ahead of the main guys at the end of the stage--he's a lot slower up the climbs. IIn the next couple stages they will not let him go into the breakaway again and the leaders will all be attacking each other, so they'll going faster than today. There will be no way GVA can stay with them because he just doesn't have the right power to weight ratio.

lone breakaway rider going for the stage win--not a GC contender, but he is only +2:40 so Sky and Movistar will be motivated to close the gap

group of 3 riders chasing about 4 minutes behind--these guys are mainly focused on catching the lead rider for the stage win and accumulating points for the Polka Dot jersey

Yellow jersey group with the main contenders (Froome, Dumoulin, Nibali, Quintana) is about 4:50 back from the leader on the road--Sky is pushing the pace at the front to tire out the other riders and prevents attacks

They're about to start Alpe D'Huez which is the POTUS of climbs in the Tour and the world. There will be insane crowds on the mountain.

No, Sky's domestiques need to push the pace on the climb or the GC guys will attack Froome and Thomas.

Breakaway guy can put in a good effort in the mountains for one or two days, but can't consistently perform at a high enough level over 3 weeks to be a contender. Also, he will lose a lot of time on the time trial. There are literally like 10 people in the world with the right genetics to (a) consistently climb well for 3 weeks (have a very high power to weight ratio) and (b) be able to also put out enough watts on a time trial to compete in a grand tour

yes, but that's not really that much in the grand scheme of things. You have to figure that Froome will gain at least a minute on Thomas in the final time trial. Thomas has came out and said that effectively Froome is still the leader--also all of the brit media members that are plugged into Team Sky think Froome is the leader still.

Yeah, Sky's helpers are basically going to push as hard as they can until its just the main GC guys left. Then the real GC battle will start. My prediction is that Dumoulin will attack and Froome covers and counter attacks for the win.

Also they already cut down on Kruijswijk's lead by like a minute and a half.

ALPE D’HUEZ, France (VN) — This year’s Tour de France is proving too punishing for the peloton’s top sprinters.

A day after Mark Cavendish (Dimension Data) and Marcel Kittel (Katusha-Alpecin) were time-cut, several more marquee sprinters abandoned the Tour en route to Alpe d’Huez on Thursday.

André Greipel (Lotto-Soudal) and two-time Tour stage-winners this year Dylan Groenewegen (LottoNL-Jumbo) and Fernando Gaviria (Quick-Step) abandoned stage 12.

All three pulled off as a dangerous breakaway chugged clear on the brutal three-climb stage across the Alps. With some GC threats in the breakaway group, including Steven Kruijswijk (LottoNL-Jumbo) who started the stage sixth overall, the main pack led by Team Sky set a menacing pace. The peloton fractured early and several top names pulled the plug on their respective 2018 Tour.

The high-profile abandons have immediate implications.

First, Gaviria’s exit all but assures Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) a record-tying sixth green jersey if he makes it to Paris. Gaviria was the only rider challenging Sagan up to now.

Second, the departures mean more chances for the sprinters still in the race for the three sprint-likely stages remaining in the Tour.

Other riders to abandon include Tony Gallopin, a key helper to Romain Bardet, who only has four Ag2r La Mondiale teammates left in the race.

EF-Drapac’s Rigoberto Urán, second overall last year, also did not start in the wake of heavy injuries from his crash in stage 9 on the cobblestones.

Greipel’s Lotto-Soudal teammate Marcel Sieberg is also out, as is another lead-out man, Katusha-Alpecin’s Rick Zabel, who was granted clemency by the race jury on Wednesday after finishing mere seconds after the day’s time cut.

I still think that Sky is riding for Froome, but if he has a bad day then they'll switch to Thomas. I still think Froome and Thomas need to work together to put more time into Domoulin because Domoulin is such a strong time trialist

Here are some stats for the rest day today.

Currently, Geraint Thomas leads with Chris Froome 1:39 behind and Tom Domoulin 1:50 behind.

There are three mountain stages coming up, so surely these standings will change, but I'm more concerned about the time trial on Saturday.

Domoulin is the current world champion in the individual time trial and Froome is equally world class. Looking back at the time trial results for these three riders over the last few years, it's not inconceivable that Thomas concede up to 2 minutes against both of these guys.

Geraint Thomas vs Tom Domoulin

2016 Tour de Romandie (15km): Domoulin beat Thomas by 59 seconds

2016 Tour de France, Stage 13 (37km): Domoulin beat Thomas by 2 minutes

2016 Tour de France, Stage Stage 18 (17km): Domoulin beat Thomas by 1:30

2016 Olympics (54km): Domoulin beat Thomas by 1:20

2017 Giro de Italia (39km): Domoulin beat Thomas by 49 seconds.

Thomas v. Froome:

2016 Tour de Romandie (15km): Froome beat Thomas by 50 seconds

2016 Tour de France, Stage 13 (37km): Froome beat Thomas by 57 seconds

2016 Tour de France, Stage Stage 18 (17km): Froome beat Thomas by 2:09

2016 Olympics (54km): Froome beat Thomas by 1:35

2017 Tour de France, Stage 1 (17km) Thomas beat Froome by 12 seconds

2018 Tirreno-Adriatico, Stage 7 (10km): Froome beat Thomas by 3 seconds

I'm not going to type out all of the Froome v. Domoulin results, but the gap between Froome and Domoulin is closer, but Domoulin has the edge. Domoulin beat Froome in both the 2016 Olympics and 2017 World Championships--both events in which these two riders were going 100%.

You can't read too much into some of these results because for some of these races the riders might not have been motivated to ride as fast as possible, especially Froome when he already had a large lead late in a grand tour.

In any case, Froome and Thomas will need to stay aggressive in this final week to give themselves some breathing room heading into the final TT.

Tuesday and Wednesday are both mountain stages and will be full of attacks. Wednesday is super short with a summit finish and they're using a grid start, so Froome and Thomas could potentially be isolated from their teammates.

Thursday is a sprint stage.

Friday is the final mountain stage and Saturday is the time trial.

I would also say Sunday is "worth watching" just because of the spectacle of racing on the Champs-Élysées.

The third week is when the race for GC really "starts".

Still a long way to go on this climb. Quintana sitting on Valverde's wheel about a minute back from the leader. Sky still has a couple domestiques in their group and look content to sit and push the pace for the moment.

I think Quintana is more concerned with copping a stage win rather than moving up in the GC.

well this is it. Last mountain stage. If Thomas can stay with Domoulin and not implode then he's likely your overall winner.

Don’t count out Froome if he gets asthma meds back to the correct levels.

The biggest drama of the day is probably whether Sagan is going to get time cut. He had a big crash a couple days back and is really riding the struggle bus today.

Final podium:

1. Thomas

Agreed. Have to think G would have been right there for the win if he wasn't protecting yellow at the end.

What do you think? Thomas goes for the Giro and Vuelta next year and Froome goes for 5?

Thomas is BOOMlike, in that u can still make it when ur older than u ought to be, have a full head of hair, and u have paid ur dues.

Froome should fade way, after this year.

The Flying Dutchman impressed me, and he could win it all next year with a better team.

Froome would have been fine if he hadn't rode the Giro first.

Froome just aint all that pretty a rider, and he always lacked that instant acceleration. But he was the champ, in spite of being hated on by the fans all these years.

That's all true, but he has a big engine and is a great time trailer, which is what you need to win. He's not punchy but he can ride away from guys when he's in top form. His 80km attack in the Giro this year was an all-timer.

Froome is undeniably methodical and tenacious, but not sexxy, we need athleticism as in steep descents and tight maneuvering on turns or flat out turbo jets for breakaway speed to love a racer
