becker was ranked 20th and as you said, played a parade of nobodies (though Curren had beaten McEnroe and Connors back to back)
i guess i'd go with Goran (I still remember watching that tournament on TV) but Wimbledon is so weird
edit: Wilander RG 1982 was pretty good too. in the SF he won the match but demanded match point be replayed because he thought the linesmen had fucked his opponent

dude was #150 and a qualifier and beat kafelnikov and corretja back to back to win the title. plus he beat corretja in a bo5 final, which is no fluke

Off the top of my head, Chris Woodruff winning the 1997 du Maurier was a pretty good showing
Beat the following:
2R: 16 seed Jan Simierink
3R: 2 seed Ivanisevic
QF: 7 seed Philippousis
SF: 4 seed Kafelnikov
F: 6 seed and reigning RG champ Kuerten (who throttled Chang in the other SF)

woah, havent heard the name "du maurier open" in 20 yrs. totally forgot it was called that. flashbacks to childhood.
i always remember miami being "the lipton"
that's a good win for woodruff but he was only #57 at the time.

but he was unseeded.
i don't think we need to stretch way down to find the lowest rank -- that wasn't the question.

i still hear Cliff Drysdale pronouncing "du Maurier" in his Aussie accent
