There are two recognisable types of Retriever. The slimmer, more athletic type is generally bred to work and should be a fit and agile dog. The other type is a slightly shorter, heavier dog favoured for showing. Bear this in mind when choosing your breeder and looking at the parents. Too much weight is harmful to a dog and prevents him having a good quality of life. Weighty dogs are also more prone to hip dysplasia.

Admittedly my roommate thinks it's because she's a rescue and was abused, has abandonment issues, etc. He also hasn't done a great job of training her. However, my cousin had a similar issue with a German Shepherd he took on as a support animal, and he ended up having to return it. So I think at least part of it stems from the breed itself.

Also, don't forget that dysplasia isn't the only major issue. That GSD gait can be overdone and cause problems. Arthritis generally is another major issue (mine has it). So on and so forth.

The gait - same, can't test. You can look at the parents though.

Here's another one - my childhood German Shepherd had the worst vision imaginable. He wasn't blind but you weren't playing fetch with him because no way would he see the ball. If you threw it he would try to sniff it out though.

After he gets to know you he'll whisper that the dog is nice and that you can't tell anyone... My dog adored him. Finally died of old age at 12.
