it's interesting to consider it from the perspective of predictive coding theory of brain function. if psychedelics work by weakening top level predictions by the brain, the self could then be seen as a high-level model the brain generates to explain and understand lower level functions. the self is then simply a representation/model and doesn't correspond to anything substantial. neurologically this makes sense. |

I was staring at my driver's license trying to figure out who/what I was and the concept of the driver's license was so strange and foreign feeling.
I kept asking my friends, "What is going on?" and they got annoyed at me asking them every couple minutes.
I started concluding that I was standing in the center of the universe, the very center of it . . .
Finally, after getting no closer to the mystery of who I was or what was going on, I saw a wave of air hit me, like a gust of wind with no breeze, hit me head on and then I remembered everything and was back to normal.
"Oh, I had a bad trip on shrooms!" I said to my friend, all excited that I finally figured it out.
"No, shit," he said, all pissed off. |
