Jack Nicholson and Michael Keaton are on another level from Bale and Ledger. People forget what movies were like when they were still a director's medium and they could be rated R and made for adults and not merely a platform for GC bullshit. Tim Burton spent another decade making great art films before he started getting high on his own farts and they took away his auteur card. Christoper Nolan is an apex commercial filmmaker and Batman Begins is great. But the original is something else. It's the most faithful to the ethos of the original character of Batman and setting of Gotham imo.

It's a well made movie and the Ledger performance is legendary. Probably top 10 among comic book movies. That being said, it's still not truly great.

It has far more memorable scenes that most action movies in the new century. The car chase/attempted kidnap with the Commissioner Gordon reveal is a truly great action sequence, so is the intro bank robbery. That kind of perfectly staged kinetic filmmaking should be given credit even if the movie is juvenile and melodramatic. It was so entertaining at the time that people awarded it artistic points it could never live up to.That leads us to be disappointed with it a decade later, but that shouldn't obscure the fact that it was a really fucking entertaining theatric spectacle.

It also made it acceptable for superhero movies to go a little dark and grittier. Didn't really pay any dividends but this GC shit is so relentless that any variation holds virtue.

it is worth watching and rewatching purely for Ledger

the best part of the kidnap scene is him staring down Batman and saying "HIT ME" in that menacing insane voice.

things don't have to be over-the-top, smack-you-in-the-face to be "intense"

No Country For Old Men is a more intense movie (e.g. the coin flip scene alone)

The violence isn't gratuitous at all.

The scene I referenced is a simple conversation in hushed tones at a gas station in which the only intensity is the THREAT of violence, which is never even spoken, only implied

the movie never slows the fuck down to breathe a little bit, it's a constant rush where every scene is its own climax. also the weird soundwave goggles or whatever near the end was just a little too future-techish for batman imo

that said, the opening bank robbery scene was 180 but tbf i haven't watched it in like 8 years so maybe it actually sucks? who knows who knows.
