you know that both parties are declining at a rapid clip, such that they look almost nothing like they used to look a mere 3-5 years ago. you know that their value is in constant flux and more precisely, in exponential decline.
and yet, if we hear accounts of these relationships from either party, the content of what they report is the usual stuff that could be said about ANY relationship, almost like it were between two carefree teenagers, without a word said about the elephants in the room: his norwood #, her BMI index, etc.
when i see such displays of obliviousness i'm astounded that such naive creatures can exist and carry on in the world in a state of blissful ignorance, without breaking down and weeping at all the decay and ugliness around them as i constantly do. |

now, if people simply said "i'm old, i acknowledge that my looks and my partner's looks are in no way comparable to someone who is younger, and i choose to value other things instead," then i would say fine. that's their choice, and it's rational.
instead, what i'm confused by is people who seemingly ARE still enamored by looks and attractiveness, but simply slide the scale of attractiveness along the age range, adapting for any conceivable standard of aging/obesity, and seem happy as a clam about the looks of their heavily balding / heavily obese partners, pretty much evincing the same qualitative joyfulness ABOUT looks that much younger people do. that's the bizarre aspect that confuses and confounds me.
most people do NOT go through some intense process of introspection and maturation and discard the importance of looks. they simply shoehorn america's 75% obesity rate into what it MEANs to "look good." that's what i don't get.
