I'm a relatively new socialist and some of it felt like I was joining a cult - in words like "comrade" seem really cheesey and alienating to me, like we're cosplaying communism from the 20th century. They also had some aspects of urban hipster culture that kind of bugged me just out of personal taste - lots of waxed moustaches with curls, snapping fingers instead of clapping (happened a couple times but not all the time), having to introduce yourself by your name and your pronoun. Call me a rural snowflake but inside I felt a big eye roll. I like get the ideas behind these things (except the moustaches) but couldn't help but wonder if some of these were cultural and perhaps alienating.
Also, there was a big emphasis on PAY YOUR DUES which will always be sort of annoying, felt like church. I kept thinking how most of my liberal/normie friends would react to some of these things...Perhaps this is just my own normie brain being in a truly leftist circle for the first time, but some things felt corny. THEN the actual meeting talked about ICE, etc, and it was pretty exciting. Maybe I'll get over the other stuff.

it's to help ppl with auditory sensitivity, clapping can be v loud and disorientating, snapping is gentler
also you can go 'mmHMM' approvingly while snapping which rly makes it worth it tbh |
