started running and doing classes because basketball can be so time consuming, but I have had horrible problems sleeping and a lot of anxiety. I believe it is because running/fitness doesn't allow pure instinct to take over like competitive sports do, which is a very important release from unnatural white collar paperwork drudgery.

I do think there's something sports or basically any competitive event can give you that mindless repetition of workout can't, but you can simulate this competitive feeling even in your own workouts. Download one of the fitness apps and you can compare how fast you run a certain area vs everyone else in your city and try to move up the board, try to beat your personal bests, etc.
