The rise of millennial "journalists", especially female journalists, has been a disaster. The death of journalism as a real business has led to a situation where almost all new journalists must be willing and able to work for free until they can get a job paying next to nothing. Oh and you need to have connections and probably attend an elite school to get this job. So who does this job now? The narcissistic sheltered children of wealthy people on the East and West Coast.
Most of the media knows nothing. They have literally no real skills, life experience, or any familiarity with the lives, ideas and opinions of people outside of their bubble. This has always been somewhat the case in the U.S., but the situation today is much worse.
As Ben Rhodes (Obama's speechwriter) discussed in the NYT, this situation makes journalists easily manipulated. But what he isn't going to complain about is their extreme bias and lack of a sense of decorum. Look at the way these young female journalist act on twitter, email, or in life in general. The standards of decency have gone down and will only continue to degrade over time.

this is actually great news.
the "elite" media has discredited itself right into the trash bin of irrelevance.
where they always belonged.

well.
what do you think precipitated the decline of rome?
"Think no-fault divorce is a modern invention? Not so! Susan Treggiari, a Stanford classics professor and author of the book “Roman Marriage” explains that ancient Romans were the ultimate realists when it came to marriage. Over a mere few centuries, they developed divorce laws that in some respects are more liberal than many state divorce laws today.
In the early days of the empire [xo ed: they mean republic here], husbands had the right to divorce their wives for any number of offenses, from adultery to making copies of the household keys to drinking wine (no go, afternoon chardonnay sippers). Roman husbands could also dump their wives for not producing an heir. Notably, it was not necessarily deemed the wife’s fault if she didn’t bear a son. And if a husband wanted to leave his wife, he had to give back her dowry, so that she would be eligible to marry again. That’s right, she took away exactly what she brought to the marriage.
As time went on, the customs of marriage and divorce in ancient Rome evolved. Eventually, wives were given the power to initiate divorce, and by the first century B.C.E. the Roman version of the no-fault divorce emerged. Either spouse could choose to leave a marriage at any time, and for any reason, including the desire to simply no longer be married!"

Soon after this "evolution" to woke, feminist marriage laws was complete Rome was in full blown crisis mode as the patriarchy/family disintegrated leading to eg,
"The Lex Papia Poppaea was a Roman law introduced in 9 AD to encourage and strengthen marriage. It included provisions against adultery and celibacy and complemented and supplemented Augustus' Lex Julia de Maritandis Ordinibus of 18 BC and the Lex Iulia de Adulteriis Coercendis of 17 BC. The law was introduced by the suffect consuls of that year, Marcus Papius Mutilus and Quintus Poppaeus Secundus, although they themselves were unmarried."
Sick and sad!

this has to be a post-Internet development
strangely, # of newspaper subscriptions technically peaked in 1993-1994. but the real internet dropoff started after 2004

Journalism became a professional class job after Watergate.
Entry-level salaries were better in the 80s relative to what they are today, but they've been very low for a long time. You have to go back to the 60s to find the blue collar reporters coming in.
What's changed in the last 10-15 years and probably has made the situation worse is the career prospects have diminished significantly as newspapers are shrinking and closing. You've seen a ton of people exit the industry in the last 20 years without being replaced.
That's exacerbated what OP is noting, but it's really not fundamentally different.

Musk's trolling of the media has really been inflaming them. They are definitely out to get him now. More public figures need to fight back.

“They’re just some rich kids in Berkeley who took their political science prof too seriously,” Musk tweeted.

It's hard to make money in the news business with the internet and social media. Google and Facebook take a big chunk of your ad revenue and then you have a billion people and other publications sharing/stealing your news instantly. It's especially difficult to make money as a sober, level-headed, above-it-all publication. So traditional media is going the way of partisan media outlets and squeezing out nickels and dimes.
Bloomberg is an exception. They can play the intelligent moderate because their revenue stream largely comes from other sources.

Look at the insight we are gaining with this new crop of journalists. If there is one thing Communist regimes were uniformly opposed to it was large prison systems. That and draconian state violence.
https://www.teenvogue.com/story/ash-sarkar-communist-called-piers-morgan-idiot
Also, being a communist means being a fierce critic of the prison industrial complex and the military industrial complex. The expanded use of drone warfare and the expansive use of deportation under Obama. You can be a vocal critic of all those things, while also looking at how Trump [has done them] because, quite simply, he was able to build on a lot of Obama's legacy, particularly in terms of executive overreach. He's been able to pursue extreme, draconian forms of state violence.
