He conflated Russian collusion (which I believe Trump when he says it's a witch hunt) with Russian meddling, which Russians have, beyond a shadow of a doubt, perpetrated and which was directed by Putin himself. They're clearly trying to infiltrate and influence our electoral process to sew discord and make Americans lose faith in their democratic institutions. Trump cucked out. Big time. And it was sad to watch. He let his ego get in the way and confused collusion with meddling. If he's Mr. Pro-America, he should have slammed Putin, and slammed him hard. He screamed at Germany over a gas pipeline and let Putin off on interfering in internal American elections?

You can imagine a lot of ways Trump could have managed that press conference without coming off the way he did. The biggest problems were the false moral equivalency of blaming America for the rocky relationship with Russia and taking sides with an adversary over his own people by saying Putin was very "strong and powerful" in his denial. Election interference isnt even necessarily illegal under international law (the hacking acts are under U.S. Domestic). This was an easy distinction to make and he easily could have flipped it back on the shitlibs for sewing so much discord that russian trolls could actually gain a voice in the marketplace of ideas. |
