But there’s ample reason to want to understand everything Stone and Manafort did with the Russians, even if it turns out they are both innocent. It’s worth our time to have the probe to provide a disincentive to anyone in the future thinking that they can toe the line and there are no consequences. During the legit Cold War period, yes, CIA was doing a ton of bad shit. Since the Cold War there’s still stuff going on but not on the level of hacking into the disfavored candidate and publishing the most damaging material public and sharing the strategy materials taken with our favored candidate. LOL in particular at the bullshit false equivalence a bunch of comrade poasters keep drawing with our help for Yeltsin in 96 and Ukraine going after Manafort, the future federal inmate, for the crimes he committed while in the Ukraine.
2) even if we take the CIA’s worst post-Cold War international political actions, there’s a case for some degree of American exceptionalism. Certainly there’s a huge set of issues re the deep state going too far, but e.g. I’m not the least bit concerned about a targeted killing of Osama Bin Laden without pakistan’s knowledge and wouldn’t have an issue with killing many other shithead terrorists and kneecapping their allies in foreign governments who are less famous and accomplished than OBL. That doesn’t make me a neocon but and it’s a slippery slope setting the right threshold for when we cross those kinds of lines. But arguing against the extreme position (I.e. we should be completely hands off and isolationist) is easy because that position is naive and dangerous. The logical extension of that reality is that if Putin wants to fuck with us to this degree we have plenty of tools to retaliate sort of nukes. Like real sanctions, working with allies and an actual cyberwar defense and counterstrike capacity. |
