How did it happen that our increasingly obvious, unbridgeable culture gap created two poles that drew exactly half the population each? Sheer chance?

Why didnt the rightwing pole or the leftwing pole draw, say, 75% of the people?

I anticipate the answer that each pole would shift to break off as much as they could from the opponent until some Pareto 50/50 balance. But wouldnt this be counteracted by the desire of people to actually kill and triumph? It it were 80/20, the winners could run wild
