I think it’s impossible to introduce time travel into any narrative without some glaring fatal flaw

the one in primer makes sense, though at the cost of being incredibly confusing.

you have to watch it like 3x at least to wrap your head around it

also need to look up theories/explanations online after the first time

Time travel is as stupid a narrative device as the dream sequence.

There’s nothing wrong with the dream sequence. Unless you mean the “it was all just a dream” and protagonist wakes up in a cold sweat thing, that’s just cliche.

If dream sequences were accurate, then nothing would make sense. There have been depictions of surrealistic dreams, but usually it's just a way to depict an alternate timeline that is undreamlike in its consistency and realism.

Good for you, Joseph of the many colored coat.

Most of my dreams consist of unrealistic stuff like forgetting I had signed up for a class I never went to, so I fail it and can't graduate. Or walking into class and it's the final exam which I haven't prepared for. Or being chased by a monster with a countdown to survival except my legs won't move, etc.

No they don't. How could I forget that I was enrolled in a class in my final term? That's only plausible in dream logic.

Now I know what you’re saying. Yes, the “dreams” that are just alternate timelines within the same cohesive reality of the waking world are stupid. But when they are depicted with dream logic or if the entire film is like one big dream (like most Lynch movies) that is cool.

it never makes sense if you assume that someone is going to the past in order to change it to make things better for people who remain in the future

Stein's;gate did it pretty well. Terminator (the first one) was alright just because nobody overlapped with their prior selves.
