Congratulations to everyone who made it onto Journal! I’m sure you all worked extremely hard for this achievement and I wish you all the very best in the work you’ll be doing for the next volume.
That being said, the lack of diversity on this masthead is truly astounding. I personally hold the entire YLJ board accountable for perpetuating a concerning dearth of diverse perspectives and experiences in legal academia.
The most diverse class in history was admitted to YLS last year. How can there be only ONE Black person and TWO Latinx people from the class of 2020 on this entire list? Together BLSA and LLSA make up about 30% of the rising 2L class, yet make up only 5% of the accepted first year editors from the class of 2020. And I know for a fact that plenty of brilliant BLSA and LLSA members applied so this certainly can’t just be chalked up to a lack of trying. I’ll also note that this is a DECREASE from the number of BLSA and LLSA members accepted last year AND the year before.
Diversity in law review membership is not only tied to opening up prestigious career opportunities down the line that minorities have typically been excluded from, it is also tied to having A BETTER JOURNAL, through more diversity in what you publish and more people to offer valuable diverse perspectives to the Journal’s work.
As someone who was not involved in the selection process, I obviously don’t have a complete picture of why there aren’t more POC on this masthead. However, I urge you to look critically at your recruitment efforts and your application process to identify exactly how and why POC are being excluded from the Journal in such staggering numbers. This is not in any way an accusation of malicious intent on the part of the YLJ Board, this is an indictment of a problem that is clearly systemic. Therefore, I also urge you to conduct and publicize a study about racial diversity on the Journal, including information on how diverse applicants have performed from as far back as you have data, and what steps the Journal is actively taking to remedy this disparity. I have the utmost confidence that the YLJ Board is capable of conducting this timely and critical investigation.
I truly wish this masthead all the best. However, I remain disappointed and disheartened by the glaring lack of diversity on this list. |
