So actually manga, or comics, are/were much more popular. "Anime"(literally, animation) sort of grew out of an appreciation for Disney and western style cartoons with a Japanese flair. But manga culture in Japan is well established, which is what popularized cartooning and these types of stories in general.

I've seen lines of Japanese kids line up outside places when a new issue of manga is coming out at a store in Japan and watch them read it. It's like watching a crack addict get a fix.
